After all of the media overload yesterday, I found 2 things to be strange, wondered if anyone else picked up on them...

1) Ross stated that during the last coaching hire he "didnt go with his gut instincts" so this time he did. I thought it was understood that Ross was the one who wanted Philbin last time around, even when others didn't. From his statement he makes it seem like he wanted someone else (McCoy I guess) but decided to trust his football people who wanted Philbin, and he reluctantly agreed?

2) Everyone is making it seem like Gase had a great "plan" for how to develop Tannehill, and also that he took the job b/c he liked Tanny's potential. Then during his interview he admits to only watching Tanny play in 1 game, and doing a brief scouting of him the year he was drafted. I am a little confused why he would even take the job without analyzing the QB situation. Very weird.

Thoughts?

I think a lot of this stuff is just speculation, or pure BS. As for #2 though I'd say any QB with over 8,000 yards and a 2-1 TD to INT ratio in 2 years has "potential". You really don't even need to see the guy playou when u see those #'s in the nfl tbh. A lot of people on here think Tannehill sucks, but bad QBS don't put up stats like that, especially behind one of the worst OL's in the league and a train wreck for coaches.

I thought he said he only saw Tannehill play LIVE once, in 2014 when the Broncos played the Fins. I'm sure he's seen plenty of tape on him.

To attempt to address your questions:

1) I too found this comment about ignoring his gut in hiring Philbin curious, but there is no debate Ross was the one who championed Philbin within his inner circle. What I'm guessing is it was more an internal struggle of Ross' mind vs Ross' gut. This could come down to something like, "I FEEL like this McCoy guy is going to be more successful...but Philbin's resume is way longer, the press keeps saying Philbin is a safer choice, and DAMN can that man put together a PowerPoint." In the end, as Ross saw the flaws he FELT in Philbin play out, you had to think he regretted not going with his gut.

#2) I'm sure this was him saying he only saw him play LIVE once, as Gase is a nerd for studying the various offenses around the league. If I were to guess what Gase said, he probably just spoke what we have been screaming at this idiotic coaching staff for a while: Design rollouts for Tannehill, take a handful of shots down the field, come up with more plays that take advantage of Tannehill's running ability, give him the ability to audible, etc. Lazors system was so rigid, that even saying "this system can adapt on the fly" probably made Ross and Tannenbaum cream their jeans.

This is all speculation on my part. These are two good questions and anyone who answers them as if they absolutely know is a fool masquerading as a sage.

No. The rumor is that it was Carl Peterson who loved Joe and said he gave the best interview he had ever seen. Supposedly Peterson also advised Ross to keep Joe around after Bullygate.

As for #2 I don't know how things work where you work, but where I work bosses generally don''t go around pointing out all the short coming of their employees especially when they've just taken over. I'm sure during his private interview he didn't say well I really haven't done any research on this team. I thought I'd just kind of wing it. We'll find out his plan soon enough.

It is all BS. These guys are aware of interest during the season. At home they do their research and convo's without being caught. He knew he was up for an interview since week 4, that is when he turned it up w Cutler

I picked up on those things also

Gase also mentioned that his agent told him it was the right job

and that's what they get paid so much to do.

I'm excited to see what he can do. He worked with Saban who is a great coach and Mike Martz who is a great offensive mind.

I'm excited much more about that than the fact that he coached Manning for a few years, or improved Jay Cutler. Cutler is a streaky QB, he has played very well under Shanahan and at other times in his career

I definitely got the impression that RT will not get a free ride, if he struggles Gase does not look like he will sugar coat things to him or to t-bomb

That is interesting and would make sense. Everyone knew Peterson was awful and I was hoping he stayed far away from anything to do with the Dolphins

My concern with Gase is that he does not seem alpha male enough, but from what Ive read hes still a no BS type of guy that holds all of his players accountable. As long as hes not soft I think he can do well. And I am very happy to learn he will be calling plays himself. I think that is a key piece of info that was overlooked yesterday. Just a shame we have so many holes bc I would like to take a QB in round 2-3 so he has a year to learn if Tanny doesnt make any progress.

I also thought one of interesting little notes was when Gase said he was told by Jon Kitna that if he gets players "paid", they will respect him. And then he followed that by saying he loved the aspect of everyone working together selflessly in Chicago.

I guess it's just the inconsistencies of a press conference, answering stupid media questions, etc.

In general I hate the coach speak crap, and the facebook questions they kept asking Gase were so bad I had to turn it off (they did some chat with him after the presser).

As far as the Kitna thing, I do believe that to be true although no one actually comes out and says it. The players want to be helped to improve their game, be put in best position to win, and in the end GET PAID. The more you think about it, 95% of the league has that mentality and it is a job for them. Any player would take a bigger payday and success from a guy who never played pro ball than the other way around.

Haha Right? It's pretty silly to think all these contacts only started a couple weeks ago. Once it was clear Philbin was getting fired (probably closer to week 3) I'm sure they had their feelers out on the down low. It's naive to think teams don't do this.
