I think a good way to gauge or have a good/realistic idea of who MIA might select in this year's draft is to go pick by pick and debate who each team that picks ahead of us will select. So let's start with DET.

I know that most mock drafts have DET selecting QB Matthew Stafford #1 overall, but I don't think that that is what the "new" DET LIONS will do.

With MIA having as good a turnaround as we had, I believe that many teams will be looking at what/how we did it and follow our blueprint, being the copycat league that the NFL is.

Mike Mayock (the most trustworthy draft guru out there) made a good point about how this year's top QBs are no Matt Ryans. This has me thinking...

I think that DET will select Eugene Monroe, the 6'6" 315 LBS mammoth LT with the #1 overall pick. Let's not forget, the LIONS have the #20 pick in the 1st round as well. I wouldn't be surprised if Mark Sanchez (who isn't that far apart from Stafford, if at all) was still there when DET picks again at #20.

And even if he was already gone...they can still pick a QB like Josh Freeman at #33, the first pick in the 2nd round.

Then, it's no secret that NE is going to franchise tag Matt Cassell because they feel that they will be able to get something for him, instead of just letting him walk after having the season he had in 2008.

So DET can even go with LT with the #1 pick and send the #20 pick to NE for Matt Cassell and then select a Defensive player at #33 or even go with a mauling G to solidify their OL for Matt Cassell, Kevin Jones, and Calvin Johnson next season.

So let's debate this for starters before going over who STL will pick at #2. Will DET follow our suit and go with a LT like the 6'6" 315 LBS Eugene Monroe at #1 or will they go with a potential franchise QB in the 6'3" 230 LBS Matthew Stafford?
 
Nice thoughts, but IMHO it's really too early to have any sort of clear ideas. But as long as we're making wild guesses ... :D

I'm a longtime UVa fan and I've watched Eugene Monroe since he was a hugely balleyhooed recruit (one of the top couple OL coming out that year by most publications), and he's going to be great. But, he's not going to be the #1 overall by anyone. Top 10 is realistic, Top Overall Pick isn't. :(

Looking at the Dolphins success, it can be attributed more than anything to the addition of Chad Pennington. While this class of QB's may not be viewed as strongly as last year's draft class ... last year's draft class wasn't actually viewed that strongly this time last year either, lol. Flacco was considered a mid-round pick this time last year, and after all the specialty games people were thinking he'd be a 2nd or 3rd rounder. Only as we approached the draft were some people speculating he might be a 'reach' late in the first.

So, I certainly wouldn't rule out the top QB candidates, because it's the most important position on the team and it usually takes a few years to develop. So, either you bite the bullet and get someone via trade/FA, and you'll pay dearly most likely, or you draft the best one you can get and build up the team around him while he sits and matures. I sure would expect a new regime to bring in a new QB via some avenue, and if it's the draft, the top overall pick makes the most sense quality-wise and salary-wise.

I'd rather wait until we see the workouts of guys like Curry, Crabtree, and the QB's before I have a decent guess as to who their pick will be. I'm good at evaluating talent, but I'm dreadful at predicting picks, lol, so I need all the help I can get! :D
 
Man! One thing I forgot to do was add a poll. That way we can move on to STL with the player that wins in the poll. Well, I guess I will just have who ever wins the "debate" have the #1 pick before we move on to STL. Then I'll add a poll to that one and on through our picks.

Yeah, I see your point, Digital, about the importance of Chad Pennington and our success. But what must be noticed was that Henne was the "draft pick" at QB, not Pennington. So we can't think that Stafford or Sanchez would be their Pennington and would help DET make a better turnaround than say Eugene Monroe.

Matt Cassell would be DET's Chad Pennington, if you will. They have 4 QBs right now that can be their #2 and #3 QBs. Not to mention they did draft a QB in the 2nd round the year before in Drew Stanton that can still be developed.

So I don't feel that the Pennington argument makes Matt Stafford over Eugene Monroe.

And then Pennington wouldn't have had the success if Jake Long wasn't protecting his blindside either.

The fact that we drafted Henne in the 2nd round and picking a LT instead of going with Matt Ryan is the point that going LT Monroe and trading the #20 pick for Cassell would be more similiar.

But if they feel that Backus is a potential LT, then you make a good point.

Yeah, I'm not saying that we can make a "confident" bet your bottom dollar mock draft at this point in time...

I just want to create a type of idea where MIA may go by discussing potential picks and potential FA moves and so forth...

I love the DOlphins, so I want to think about where they may go...even if we haven't even gotten to the Combines yet...:wink:
 
Another point in this debate/discussion (more like a discussion really)...

The fact that DET went with an OT last season by selecting a RT in Gosder Cherilus and the fact that LT JEff Backus is still fairly in his prime at 31 yrs old...can make an argument that DET would go with a QB like Matthew Stafford at #1 after all.

But the reason the Combines is so important and maybe they can keep Backus at LT and just use the #20 pick on a mauling G like D Robinson....is to see how Stafford or Sanchez is eventually going to grade out for Mike Mayock (who is the one I like to take his educated opinion from).

If Mayock ups his opinion of Stafford or Sanchez enough to make them potential franchise QBs...I would probably think that maybe DET would indeed end up with a better draft by "not" sending the #20 pick to NE for Cassell and just selecting a QB at #1 and then a mauling G at #20 to team with Backus and Cherilus solidifing the OL that way.

Then using the #33 pick on a Defensive stalwart. Hmm? Maybe that "is" the way I think they will go after all...

Funny, I'm debating with myself. LOL.
 
Their going QB no matter what! They have to give their fans some sort of hope that it will soon change. Mayock said there's no M.Ryan or J.Flacco in this years draft and stated he means that nobody will come in and start in their rookie year and have as big of an impact. That doesn't mean Stafford isn't worthy of the #1 pick and could use a year or two on the bench. Andre Smith is the only other player worthy of this pick but I do believe there is a better chance this year that they can actually trade down a few spots. I don't think it will happen but just a better chance, last year there was zero chance.

They deperately need to go defense with their other picks but you never know!
 
I don't think Detroit will draft a QB with their 1st pick. I think they will trade down, maybe with KC, then pick either Eugene Monroe or Malcolm Jenkins.

I think that they will look at what Miami did last year, and try to do the same. Draft big bodies for the lines. But if Jenkins is there they will grab him.

And lets face it, they will still choose 1st or 2nd overall next year, and select Sam Bradford anyways.
 
i like monroe but he's not the best LT in the draft.. i think andre smith is better and oher IMO are better but they are all three very close in talent and i think detroi has a good chance of picking OT but they are the lions so dont count out Crabtree :) jk

Actually, no they are not. Matt Millen was fired, remember? They have different FO.

Monroe is better than Andre Smith because Smith is a LG or RT due to being only 6'4". Monroe is 6'6" 315 LBS and definitely worthy of the #1 pick once the league saw how Jake Long and Ryan Clady faired...
 
Lions will go with their first pick a QB and then with the 2nd first rounder a LT. They could go either way but I just see it going like that unless something happens in FA

No way they go defense. They go either QB or LT. May go Defense at #20, but may go OL, if they go QB at #1. THey need to solidify what they started with Calvin Johnson.

They can use the 2nd round and on for "D".
 
Detroit needs a lot to not say much, but I have to say I think they might go with Aaron Curry at number 1. Stud LB that could come in to help a horrid (absolutely horrid) defense. Especially since they were ranked dead last in total defense in 2008.

Then they just go best pick available with the 20th pick because they need solid players everywhere to at least be somewhat competitive in 2009.

Nah, can't agree with that one. No way they go with an OLB. They already got Sims and should be able to find another DL at pick #33.

The two obvious #1 options are going to be Matthew Stafford or Eugene Monroe.

Now, they did draft Gosder Cherilus last year to play RT and they do still have Jeff Backus at LT that is still in his prime. So now I'm starting to lean on them drafting their franchise QB in Matthew Stafford at #1 and then going big time mauling G in Duke Robinson at #20 to solidify that line for the Stafford, Jones, and Calvin Johnson show...and put Robinson either at LG or RG to help open up holes in the running game.

Then I see them going with "DEFENSE" for the 33rd pick and beyond, save another OFFENSIVE player somewhere in between the 33rd pick and the 7th round...

That's why I wrote " they desparetly need to go defense with their other picks"
