TORONTO (AP) -- The Toronto Argonauts signed former NFL first-round draft pick R. Jay Soward on Tuesday.

Soward, a wide receiver, was taken 29th overall by the Jacksonville Jaguars in 2000. He finished third all-time at Southern California with 1,178 yards on kick returns, and eighth in receptions (110).

Soward struggled in his tenure with the Jaguars, when he was plagued substance abuse problems. He caught just 14 passes for 154 yards in 13 games during the 2000 season.
Alouettes sign former Bucs WR Green

MONTREAL (AP) -- The Montreal Alouettes upgraded their offense Tuesday, signing former NFL wide receiver Jacquez Green.

Terms of the contract were not released.

Green, 28, most recently played for the Detroit Lions in 2002. He had 162 receptions for 2,311 yards in five seasons with Tampa Bay and Detroit.

His best season was 1999, when he caught 56 passes for 791 yards and three touchdowns for the Bucs.

Green will be a primary target for Alouettes quarterback and league MVP Anthony Calvillo, and can also return punts and kickoffs.
