Is it always worth taking that elite player? Or should you sometimes trade back and get 2 pretty good starters?

I think the best example would be:

Earl Thomas/Dez Bryant/ Demaryius Thomas vs Jared Odrick and Koa Misi

Yes the Dolphins passed up an elite starter for two pretty good starters, but Odrick and Misi are far from busts.

Yeah, this is what's called An Epic ****-UP.

Misi is barely an NFL starter, when healthy, and how often is he even close to 100%? Odrick was OK, but really proved his worth (or lack thereof) last year when our run-D was getting gashed week in, week out.

This isn't a serious question is it?

Yes it is. I think FH severely underrates Jared Odrick and Koa Misi. However, I'm not going to say they made the right decision.

I'm not asking the question was that move in the 2010 draft the right one. I'm just using that as an example.

Well think of any other example of an elite player compared to two decent starters and ask yourself who'd you rather have? I think after making said example you'll realize why I asked if its a serious question or not.

That is why I do not like trading down especially when we have a top 10 pick. I wanted to draft Earl Thomas that year and to this day I am sure the Dolphins regret trading back. You can not pass up an elite talent for the shot at 2 decent starters. Not only are top 10 picks considered to be more elite, they should at the least be a very solid starter(except our own personal bum- Dion Jordan)...... I would rather give up a late 2nd or 3rd round pick to move up to draft an "elite" talent in the the top ten. Usually players drafted in the first few picks in the first round have a higher percentage of being great players......Just my opinion

On draft day, if you had a crystal ball, and you knew for a fact that a player like Earl Thomas would become elite, of course you take him.

But reality is that you never know for certain whether a player will turn out to be "elite" or a "pretty good starter".

That early pick could be a bust like Ryan Leaf, Dion Jordan, Ted Ginn Jr, Trent Richardson, etc.

And later picks can turn out to be elite, like Richard Sherman, Tom Brady, Antonio Bryant, etc.

I'm guessing you wouldn't know they were going to be elite, say like in the draft. You can assume they will be if they are drafted high enough. Because if they were elite (Suh) you are paying big bicks for them when you added them. But if there was a way to know ahead of time I'd always go with the elite player provided you can afford to pay them under the salary cap. But because of the salary cap you can't have a team of truly elite players, good players have to be the bulk of the team.

Whiffing on most of our top picks put us in a position for the Turd-trust to think quantity over quality to fill the holes that they created.

How about picking Eric Kumerow at pick #16? Or would trading down have been a better move?

It is not the pick number, in that case it was the player selected. Shula / Charlie Winner missed on some first round picks as well.
Since Johnson left (who always took a shotgun trade down approach and usually did ok), the Fins have been stumbling and bumbling.
What about Vernon Carey vs Vince Wilfork? We always picked the wrong players.
The list goes on and on. Just terrible evaluation and draft execution.

You can't tell who will be elite as the draft unfolds. Maybe Thomas was coached very well by the 'Hawks staff that made him elite. I can't say our coaching staff is producing elite talent. Grimes and Suh are elite. They both came from somewhere else.

I've always been a believer that businesses spend too much time worrying about the bottom 80% and not enough about the top 20% but I'm curious if anyone has an argument against that train of thought.
