2001 draft review

Well at least we got ourselves a pro bowl calibur reciever in Chambers.

The scary thing is how many teams actually did worse than the Wannstadt fins.

We got a Pro Bowl reciever and Wannstadt out of town, what more could you want. Any other good players would have allowed Wannstadt to stay longer.

Greenwood started for a while with us and had immediate impact, and in 2004 he actually racked up respectable stats.

I would have actually given us a B- in that draft.

You get a Pro-Bowl player, a starting OLB, and a solid backup RB out of a draft and you have to call it a little above average.

would you rather 3 backups, or one Pro Bowl guy out of a draft? Give me the Pro Bowler.

I expected Travis to do better in the NFL. I know his size didn't permit him but after the career he had at FSU I just expected him to light it up in the pro's.

Chambers is amazing. I liked Greenwood, he played well for us, so I don't see him as a waste. I also like Minor. He has been a good backup, and helped out on special teams. I won't lie, I did expect more outta him because how well he played in college. Fletcher will IMO go down in Dolphins history as the worst 1st round pick ever. He had so much potential coming outta college, and just never came around. Day two, for the number of picks we had (5,6,6,6,6,) and we really didn't come away with much. Over all, I like the draft. A pro bowl WR doesn't come every year.

Great thread! Wish it had been posted over a month ago when so many were trying to grade this years draft. But that's a moot point since the article didn't come out until yesterday.

I like King's grading criteria...

How many of their 2001 draftees are still contributing players on the team:

2 - Chambers and Minor

How many of the draftees are contributing players elsewhere:

None.

Round 1 - Fletcher is on the Lions roster but not their depth chart
Round 3 - Greenwood (I mean rapper, ULTIMATE) is on the Texans roster but not their depth chart
Round 4 - no pick
Round 5 - TE Shawn Draper is on the Falcons roster (3rd string Left Tackle?)
Round 6 - OT Brandon Winey is on the Panthers roster but not their depth chart
Round 6 - QB Josh Heupel is not playing in the NFL
Round 6 - DE Otis Leverette is on the Titans roster but not their depth chart
Round 6 - LB Rick Crowell is not playing the NFL
Round 7 - no picks

How many second-day hits did the team have:

None. Unless you count Minor. He went in the third round. Minor was a superstar at FSU. Not so much in the NFL. But he does contribute.

So when you break it down. The only reason we get a C grade is because of Chambers. And Minor to a degree.

Without Chambers, we would have gotten a D-

THANK YOU DAVE WANNABE, you moron!!!

Greenwood contributed while he was here, but that does not cut it with me. I wouldn't be happy if Crowder was gone in five years.

I actually liked the Heupel pick. There wasn't anybody else worth taking. If Heupel didn't pan out, fine. But it was worth a shot. We were in desperate need of a QB.

Speaking of QBs, here's how we could have gotten an A+ grade in the 2001 Draft...

Round 1 - Drew Brees. Imagine if we had Brees and Ricky Williams on the same team in 2002 and 2003? Even Dave Wannabe couldn't have screwed that up. (Actually, he probably could have.)

Round 2 - Chambers. Oh yeah, we got him.

Round 3 (85th) - RB Rudi Johnson. But he would have been a "reach."

Round 3 (88th) - QB Chris Weinke. The only knock against him was his age. But he was one of the best college quaterbacks ever. Why a team in desperate need of a QB doesn't pick him is beyond me. !!!&$^% Wanny!!! I still believe Weinke could have been a great NFL QB. But he landed in a bad situation in Carolina. Put him on a different team, and he's their starting QB today. And don't think there isn't a good reason why Carolina has kept him around as their #2 QB for five years!

Round 4 - no pick

Round 5 - WR T.J. Houshmandzadeh. But he would have been a "reach."

Round 6 - CB Renaldo Hill. But we got him now, so it's all good.

I don't think there was anybody else worth a crap in the 6th or 7th round. If anybody knows of any players we could taken instead of Heupel, Leverette, or Crowell please let me know.

Round 7 - no pick

Other interesting facts:

Will Allen was taken in the 1st round of the 2001 Draft. Four picks ahead of Fletcher. So now we have Allen instead of Fletcher. See, it all works out.

We could taken WR Steve Smith in the 2nd round instead of Chambers, but he would have been a "reach." A reach!!! Steve Smith would have been a reach! See, that's why I don't put any stock into that "reach" talk. But I'd rather have Chambers than Smith anyway.

Also, Sedrick Hodge went in the 3rd round of the 2001 Draft. Now we have Hodge. So, hopefully, that will make up for Greenwood.

We could have taken A.J. Feeley in the 5th round. And don't think Wanny wouldn't have. But Philly beat him to it, so one pick later he took TE Shawn Draper.

Fletcher was not an awful pick except we had no QB so why take a nickel in round 1.

Fletcher is the classic bust. He wasn't a bad pick in the sense he was selected too early. He went off the board at about the right spot. His college credentials were solid. But his technique was poor and he proved unable to learn the pro system and thus has beeen an utter bust from day one!

Why he was such a disappoimtment to us was, we didn't need a CB in that spot at all, even if he had turned into a good one!

Yatil Green was worse. Higher expectations. He was supposed to be a big-time WR for Marino. A piece of Jimmy Johnson's Superbowl puzzle a la Michael Irvin. And he never played a down.

Vernon Carey is worse. He's still on the team.

Sammie Smith, John Avery, and Lorenzo Hampton were worse. All failed attempts to provide Marino with a running game.

And these 1st-rounders were all just as bad as Fletcher...
