Just think, if we would have taken Chad Johnson in the first round instead of Jamar Fletcher, we could have Chambers and Johnson.

Some other players that would could have taken instead of Jamar Fletcher:

Reggie Wayne
Todd Heap
Drew Brees
Alge Crumpler
Kendrell Bell
Ken Lucas
Kris Jenkins
Aaron Schoeble
Matt Light
Lamont Jordan

these are just some of the players that were taken after Fletcher and before Chambers. forget about Steve Smith who wasn't taken till the third round.

Oh, what might have been. At least we managed to get Chambers.

There are always guys that fall through the cracks like Tom Brady, who I believe went in the 5th or 6th round. You never know how some guys will turn out.

this is called second guessing, in drafts every year there are dozens of examples of this....it's pointless to say what IF when at the time i wouldn't have taken Chad Johnson or Reggie Wayne over Fletcher. Especially since our mediocre secondary got toasted vs. J-Ville 62-7 before and had been deteriorating since.

Drafts are the biggest "what ifs" in football. I thought the Jamar Fletcher draft choice wasn't needed because I thought at the time we had more pressing issues than a nickel back. Oh well

to be fair to Fletcher, he was one of the greatest corners to ever play college football. His skills just didn't translate to pro success, and he went from a bad situation here (bad scheme for him, and two pro bowlers in front of him) to a worse situation in SD (Not that SD is a bad team, he's just part of a really bad secondary)

you never know with drafts

in 02 the Bengals were bashed by everyone and their mother for drafting Levi Brown at 10 (who's been a very good tackle, and is deserving of a pro bowl selection this year), while the everyone was saying Mike Williams would be a dominating force for the Bill's O-line.

but as for the 01 draft, we needed a QB (Brees) and Johnson is from Miami and was literally begging for Wanny/Spielman to draft him.

?? One of the best CB's Ever??? Maybe @Wisconsin..while he was nationally recognized I doubt many ever said he was one of the best ever..

Ummm we probably wouldn't have taken Johnson had we taken Chambers...

The best scenario would have been if the Saints hadn't taken Deuce and we had nabbed him. That would have saved two first round picks the next couple of years and have given us a great shot in 2001 even.

The whole defense got toasted that day. How can you call out the secondary for that debacle. Fred Taylor looked like he was running in a scrimmage game. No one on Miami's defense showed up that day.
By your logic the whole draft should have devoted to defense.

I'll agree that our secondary was awful in the Jacksonville loss, but we were hardly deteriorating before the 2001 draft. In 2000 we led the nfl in interceptions and sent three members of the secondary to the pro bowl (Madison, Surtain and Marion). Secondary was one of our best units and ours was probably the best in the leauge that year so I still to this day don't know why we drafted a cornerback in the first round

Had we taken chad johnson, he would be doing exactly what chris chambers is doing for us right now, and chambers would be doing what chad johnson is doing. chambers would be a much better reciever statistically atleast if he was taken by the bengals for example, and i doubt chad would be dropping 1200 yard seasons if he had fiedler/feeley/frerotte throwing him the ball
