This was the offensive line for the #1 ranked offense in the league in 2003, coordinated by Scott Linehan, who is now our offensive coordinator:

LT
Bryant McKinnie
6'8" 335

LG
Chris Liwienski
6'5" 325

C
Matt Birk
6'4" 310

RG
David Dixon
6'5" 360

RT
Mike Rosenthal
6'7" 318

Average height and weight: 6'5.8" 330

This is our current offensive line:

LT
Damion McIntosh
6'4" 320

LG
Jeno James
6'4" 320

C
Seth McKinney
6'3" 310

RG
Rex Hadnot
6'2" 325

RT
Vernon Carey
6'5" 335

Average height and weight: 6'3.5" 322

If Linehan wants to replicate what he had in Minnesota (and he'd be smart to IMO), then we'll likely be targeting BIGGER offensive linemen in the draft and free agency.

I did the research -- now I'll leave it to you all to tell us who they are. Marcus McNeill is a 6'9" 338-pound LT from Auburn, for example.

There´s no doubt you have more power with big offensive linemen but can they passblock and move quickly??

Thanks for the info. I think we have to improve our line too because it will help our backs.

it's not up to Linehan what his OL is like, it's the OL coach.

The OL coach in Minny at the time wanted big guys, now they're making the transition to smaller linemen.

His line in SD (minus Fonoti) wasn't big by NFL standards.

Alabi is not that big.

Culpepper had a helluva year that year, and so did Randy Moss.

okay.

i think its a better move to let HH handle the OL problems than linehan.

I believe that unless coach H believes Alabi is ready to start at LT for us next year we will be targetting a LT on the first day of the draft. Also I would love to see Hadnot be our center. It will be easier to bring in a rg than a center.

nice research, but one point I'd make is that David Dixon @ 360lbs sort of throws off the numbers a little.....other than him, the guys we have now measure out pretty evenly with what Minny had.

Of course I have no inside knowledge of this, but my guess is that Houck is asked to teach the line to block in whatever way fits the system best. And Linehan is responsible for creating and implementing the system, so my guess is that it's HIS call, not Houck's, as to what KIND of linemen we have. Houck's job is to get them playing as well as they can within Linehan's system. Linehan's job is to tell Saban what kind of linemen he needs to make his system work best, and from what he had in Minnesota, it looks like the bigger guys fit the bill for him.

Right, but it could be the case that Linehan likes to have at least one guy who outweighs just about everybody on the field (Dixon) to run behind frequently. And McKinnie is a much bigger LT than McIntosh.

Big lineman are great if you want to pass. Take a look at denvers o-line, small and quick. And what are they good at? Oh ya running.

And that's why they need a mobile QB like Elway and Plummer. With the QBs we've been looking at since Mueller came on board (Lemon and Printers), I'm wondering whether we could stay smaller on the line like you're saying.
