This years' Quarterback class is very poor and if Mark Sanchez and Matthew Stafford decided not to declare this could have been the worst class in NFL History. Let's start at the top...
Matthew Stafford has an NFL ready arm which allows him to make all the throws; Stafford possesses good size but I question his mental aspect of the game. Often time I see him stick to a receiver even if he is covered and force the ball into spots he shouldn't. He also carries the label of not winning the big-game for me. With that said there is no question that he is the best Quarterback in this draft. Mark Sanchez is another solid player but he is hard to judge for me because he had a lot of toys to play with while at Southern California. Sanchez does have a nice arm and did carve up a good Penn State defense in the Rose Bowl.
I have Josh Freeman as the 3rd rated Quarterback in this draft class and to me that isn't good. Freeman reminds me of a poor man's Daunte Culpepper. He is a big guy at 6"6 and does have a strong arm but mentally he makes way too many mistakes. The guy who impressed me most during Senior Bowl Week is Rhett Bomar. He was the #1 Nationally Ranked High School Player when he committed to Oklahoma. He got into some off the field issues that led to his dismissal. Rhett has an NFL arm and to me might be the best Pro. I think in Round 4 Bomar is an absolute steal. Nate Davis out of Ball State is an interesting prospect as he lacks ideal size at 6"0 but seems to make all the throws. After the injury of Dante Love, his productiong decreased at Ball State. I could see a team like the Panthers taking a flyer on him in Round 2. Cullen Harper practiced terribly during Senior Bowl week but played okay during the actual game. Coming into the season Harper was one of the top Quarterback's in the nation but he was benched during the season and has been hot and cold since then. Graham Harrell is a guy who's stock just went South. The Senior Bowl game exposed that Harrell doesn't posses the arm-strength to make all the throws. He was missing easy throws all nigh and in my eyes he fell from Round 3 to Round 6. Nathaniel Brown is an interesting small-school prospect who is worth watching. Should this guy go undrafted I think this is a guy to take a flyer on.
Pat White is the enigma of this draft. Whether he is a receiver, a wild-cat specialist, or a Quarterback there is no question the kid can play ball. he chose to stick to Quarterback for Senior Bowl week and landed himself MVP of the game. His speed is just spectacular as is his ability to make people miss. Pat White doesn't have the best arm and was not asked to make a lot of big time throws while at West Virginia. Yet this kid has continued to prove critics wrong including myself. I am not sold on taking him as a Quarterback but i think he will be succesful somehow in the NFL. The day he is drafted he will become a fan favorite.
Players such as Curtis Painter out of Purdue and Hunter Cantwell out of Louisville are good players but far too inconsistent. One week they look like solid 2nd Round Quarterbacks and the next you ask yourself why they even play football?
The darkhorse to me is John Parker Wilson. This kid had a very good senior season at Alabama and looked suprisingly impressive in the Senior Bowl. He has good mobility, a decent arm, and great intangibles. I think someone will get themselves a football player inthe 6th round.
While this draft class for Quarterbacks is weak, next year's promises to be spectacular with the likes of Sam Bradford out of Oklahoma, Colt McCoy out of Texas, Zac Robinson out of Oklahoma State, Tony Pike out of Cincinnati, and even Tim Tebow out of Florida. Luckily for us Quarterback is not a pressing need for the Dolphins. Chad Pennington is a man at Quarterback while Chad Henne is being groomed for the future. Next Up...
