By giving the money that Vernon Carey would want to Jordan Gross, we would upgrade the RT spot. CAR has to re-sign or franchise Julius Peppers, so very good chance that they won't be able to franchise Gross, like they did last season. Also they just had to re-sign Wharton to a big contract last season, so I doubt they'd be able to re-sign Gross.

Plus, there is a reason why they drafted Jeff Otah last April...it was because they knew that they would probably lose Gross in 2009.

So Jordan Gross should be our first FA signing when the clock strikes midnight, as it did when we signed Smiley.

Then, reports out of MIN is that with the drafting of Sullivan last April and Matt Birk having turned 32 years old...Birk may not be re-signed by the club. Perfect Center and RT to UPgrade the Dolphin OL.

Then we can keep Al Johnson as the backup C and Satele can backup both G spots, which of course would be Smiley at LG and Thomas at RG.
Move Ndukwe to backup RT and draft a backup LT in the second day of the draft. Viola! UPgraded OL.

LT-J. Long/(second day pick)
LG-J.Smiley
C- M.Birk/A.Johnson
RG-D.Thomas/S.Satele
RT-J.Gross/I.Ndukwe

I like it . . . but Gross has been very solid at LT this year . . . he is going to want LT money, but I like the idea.

With your philosophy I'm thinking:

LT - Jake Long
LG - Samson Satele/Shawn Murphy
C - Birk
RG - Justin Smiley/Donald Thomas
RT - Jordan Gross

Murphy may be ready by next year . . . and even tho Donald looked very promising, I still think moving Samson out of the C, opens him up to START at LG. I really want Smiley at RG . . . him and Gross on that right side would be beastly.

This opens us up to 2 more linemen . . . Ndukwe has versatility so maybe he stays . . . but I definitely think we draft one of these promising Centers in this next draft to groom behind Birk and eventually take over. Also need to groom another tackle prospect.

Birk or J.Brown from Baltimore who's 25 and has 4 years playing for a run first offense aswell.

Then let's truely make this an Oline nobody can handle and draft Duke Robinson with our first.

Question, If Satele is too small to play center, how can he be big enough to play guard? I thought guards were usually shorter than Tackles and heavier, from 315 to 335. CK, you want to take a shot at this one?

We already have the highest paid Lineman in the league. I doubt we pay LT money for a player we start at RT...

The problem is Duke will be gone by the time we pick.

But I like the philosophy behind it. I have been for building a great O-line for the longest time.

can you please explain to me why you'd wanna bring in a guy to be our Center who's 32? if you want to BUILD a dominant OL...why bring in an O-Lineman who's on the wrong side of 30...get that Center in the draft...

Jason Brown is close to signing an extention with the Ravens-

Draft Alex Mack in the first round. He is the best center to come out in YEARS.

I'm actually leaning this way myself. In light of Sparanos post playoff game comments about getting bigger and stronger in our lines, why not take a guy like Mack.
If he's everything he's cracked up to be, and he's there, we shouldnt pass on him. He was an absolute beast in his bowl game. Offensive line is as much a need as any other need we have.

I dont Like Satele at guard, not physical enough. Either you keep him at centre if you think hes the right guy, or he plays in a zone blocking scheme where he would be more suited.

I for one don't see Satele beating out Donald Thomas or Justin Smiley at a guard position. Not with the praise Thomas was getting from teammates, opponents, and coaches.

How old is Gross?

Gross is 28, would be 29 when the season starts.

I wouldn't mind Mack or Unger at C. Both are solid.

What about Luigs from Arkansas? I would like Mack but would like him at 2a or 2b. Centers don't usually go that high. Much rather grab Raji or a LB in the first. If he is seen as the BPA then I'm all for it. He would instantly improve the line that starts and have a quality backup with starting experience.

Maybe he can or maybe he can't. Bottom line Satele should be at the very least allowed to compete for a starting OG job.
