2014 Coaching Data Base

Again what you have to look for is how players play for a coach and what type of improvements they make. Joe Philbin's reputation earned him a shot. Whether it was him being in over his head or his head wasn't in it due to family tragedy, or whatever I don't know. For every first time failure there's a success. The bigger thing to worry about is a GM first as it's becoming fairly obvious that Ireland is impossible to work with.

Gruden will have more damaging stories to come out from his past. Nobody likes him. Overrated.

Jon, yes.

I want Jay Gruden. Check his bio, he's just an intriguing candidate. I think of all the coaches whose names are being bandied about, he is the most likely to be an elite coach.

But at this point, I settle for anyone who can stop the bleeding.

I'm still on board with David Shaw, but he probably won't come here because of the Martin mess. He public supported Martin.

I'm liking a coach who used to be a head coach. Like when John Fox left Carolina and went to Denver. I'd like Gruden to bring some smarts and emotion to this team.

Jay Gruden is interesting. He is dynamic and can ask his brother for advice.

Schottenheimer is the only veteran on that list that interests me. I know it is crazy. But, the guy builds good teams everywhere he has coached.

I wouldn't mind complaining that we can't get past the AFC championship game. Would you?

Ross to Ireland- "Jeff, get me Jon on the line, and if he asks if he can have GM responsibilities, tell him yes."

"Yessir, Mr. Ross!"

Step 1: Restore credibility.
Step 2: Make the jump to excellence.

Joe Philbin has failed with step one.

It just occurred to me.

If I were Ross, I would seriously consider sacking Philbin and Ireland TODAY if Schottenheimer would become interim head coach.

I know it is crazy. But Schottenheimer wouldn't allow this team to be listless and perform like they did last night. At least he puts players in a position to succeed.

I love this team and can't stand to watch it. I turned on a Big Bang Theory rerun during the 2nd quarter because I was so disgusted. I can handle losing. I can't handle losers.

Tony Dungy, Bill Cowher, Marty Schottenheimer.

Not a big fan of recycled HCs, but Dungy would be my choice if he could be persuaded into it. In addition to getting a guy who has proven he can win, he's a guy that would get a lot of positive PR from the outset and help get the Dolphins through this Martin mess. Also, he isn't the type of coach that would demand control of the personnel stuff.

I'd still favor getting a young dynamic assistant to be head coach and an experience personnel director as GM (someone had a great list of potential targets a week or so ago) -- people talk about getting these great play-calling assistants for head coach, but that's not what a head coach does. Look at Billick: great offensive mind as an assistant, boring offensive head coach whose teams won with defense. You want someone who is competent, who will hire quality assistants and who can motivate and be organized.

But I could accept Dungy or Schottenheimer. If Ross could get that done, I might forgive some of the mess he's made of the Dolphins.

I'm 100% with you. But it won't happen. This organization has no direction, no intelligence, no passion, and no daring. We will get another 7 games of lame duck Joe Philbin.

Big name hires before our 3 OC/Position coach hires...

Jimmy Johnson
Dave Wannstedt
Nick Saban

Not being a head coach before is not why our last couple of guys failed. I also will remind everybody that no coach has ever won a Super Bowl with 2 teams.

As for Shula. He wasn't a great recruiter. He was ok, but not great. Saban is a great recruiter.

All very valid points, well said.

Our previous OC/Position Coach hires were men who were in over their heads. Which was some of the sentiment I was speaking of earlier. We need a man who's bigger than the organization. It's not that I don't believe Position Coaches can't be great HCs, but not every opportunity is created equal. Sure, every HC has to start somewhere. But that does not also imply every HC vacancy can be filled by a 1st time HC.

Those that won't to point out HCs who won early should look at the situations. And honestly, we do NOT have an environment that is conducive to winning. We have failures and weaknesses at every level in this organization. Unlike teams that are "1 player away", we are not "1 HC away from greatness". The problems we have start with the first block in the organization and are found throughout the entire organization.

We do not have seasoned ownership. We do not have an Executive staff with proven leaders. We do not have a respected and experienced GM. We do not have a FO that garners respect and acquires superior athletes with character and discipline. We do not have a strong locker room. We do not have men on the field leading the team. We do not have a passionate fan base that is loyal to their team. We do not have a home field. We do not have the respect of the other 31 teams in the NFL.

We do have young talent. But not truly much else.

If all we needed was a HC, we would have a long list of names to choose from. Instead, we need a man who commands the whole organization from the field. A man that comes with a team of men to stabilize the entire organization. We need a true leader. But he MUST be the coach, first and foremost.

When I read this, "I also will remind everybody that no coach has ever won a Super Bowl with 2 teams.", I said, "you're right".

But right now, our situation is dire. We don't need Super Bowls. We need a leader. A man who can restore pride and respect.

In the past when we've blown it up, the biggest problem was talent. Jimmy had the resources and ability to bring it all together and he did, except for one thing: Jimmy failed to develop Dan Marino's successor. Thus, when Jimmy and Dan left, everything Jimmy had built plateaued. If we had found Marino's successor, Wanny might still be coaching. Jimmy's plan was great, but he failed to execute the most critical step. And he followed that failure by leaving. He left before the job was done.

Now, talent isn't the problem. A QB isn't the problem. Now, we need everything else. If we could take that moment and fused it with this talent, Jimmy might have been the only coach with a Super Bowl with 2 different teams.

I agree that there are a lot of great HC candidates out there. But that's not what we need. This organization needs an icon. A face. A galvanizing force that takes the resources we DO have and molds them into something we've not had in a long time: a respected organization.
