Dolphins Training camp starts in 5 days. Thank God! Here is my detailed analysis of what I expect of the Dolphins this season, backed up by a few different stats.
Breakdown
Coaching - Philbin enters his 3rd and most crucial year as a head coach. Just like NFL players I usually expect the biggest jump in year 3 of his career. I am hopeful that he has learned from his mistakes and can lead his men to the playoffs.
The Dolphins did add 3 important improvements to their coaching staff. Bill Lazor, John Benton, and Mark Duffner. Coaching is more vital than a lot of people realize. I've heard from many espn insiders and beat writers, they have much respect for Bill Lazor. Sherman's offense was dull and very predictable. The fact that Mike Wallace can move around and hopefully be sent on more deep routes will open up this offense. As for Benton my cousin works for the Texans and was very upset about losing Benton and said we got a great coach, he could be the Kacy Rodgers of the offense. Finally, Duffner is a huge upgrade over George Edwards who I was never a fan of. Jaguars always seemed to have good LB's. I think he had something to do with it. Plus his resume at Coaches Inc. On Google is an impressive read.
QB - Ryan Tannehill it is your time to step up. No excuses. Not starting at QB till Junior year of college is impressive for THill but he learned all he could from Sherman. I'm excited for what he could do in this offense. Everyone sees the potential in him let's see it now. We saw the potential last year and hopefully that 2 game skid at the end was just a fluke. Matt Moore is a great backup and Devlin is fine at 3rd QB.
RB - Lamar Miller, Moreno, DT, and Thiggy. If you read scouting reports from the 2012 draft you see a lot of hefty comparisons to shady McCoy in Lamar. One can dream and hope that the same offense shady had will benefit Lamar. Though Shady is an elite RB. Moreno is our 3rd down rb, which is great, he protected Manning and can catch, a decent runner and the underated factor is he brings emotion to a team that seemed to lack emotion last year. Players feed off emotion, that's a boost. DT will be in a battle with Williams but ultimately I believe he'll be your power back, according to Omar Kelly (A Finheaven Favorite) Thomas has been grinding. Depite what people think DT actuslly tied for 9th, accoriding to PFF, for forced missed tckles per attempt. and 13th and yards gained after a forced missed tacke. I was shocked too. I don't expect much but hope he can just be a short yardage back, if not find a training camp cut to be one. Thiggy is your KR and hopefully he does better this year.
WR - Why do people want Andre Johnson? We got a deep group. Mike Wallace will flourish in this offense. Him and THill just got to connect deep, if that gets fixed WATCH OUT. Hartline is Tannys blankie and that chemistry is great. I love Gibson and hope he's healthy. We also got Matthews, and 2 rookies named Landry and Hazel who are GOOD. deepest offensive group. No worries.
TE/HBack - Big play Clay is a top 3 favorite player of mine and was ranked a top 100 player in football. Respect. Dion Sims is your redzone target and I hope improves his inline blocking. Lynch is not quite Fasano (
who I liked) but he has decent hands and is a solid blocker. This will open the door for Miller and the gang. Gator is my last prediction. He will be a nice chess piece for this O. Tanny has many weapons.
OL - This is the Key to the entire season right here, this unit. Albert at LT is huge. I am so excited we have an established tackle to block THill. No more Snake and no mount MC. Albert already seems to like Miami based off Twitter. Billy Turner will be his backup and a solid backup at LG. I'm satisfied. We we're all writing off Dallas Thomas last year but the scouting reports said he would settle in at LG. I have high hopes for him and judging by OTA's he might be ok there. Plus he'll be an upgrade over Brenner who played a lot at LG once Cog was suspended. Pouncey out hurts us a lot, but if he comes back after the bye week he'll have less wear and tear on him, which will help later in the season. I hope Shelley Smith can handle duties till he gets back. Smith and THill we're featured in a SI article this offseason of players up an coming. Hopefully Benton, his first ever NFL OL coach, can improve his pass blocking. His run blocking is great and he fits the scheme way more than Jerry. Colledge was just signed and has started 100+ games in a row so he can't be that bad. I love our Guard depth. At RT we have our 1st round pick J. James. According to scouting reports he is a great pass blocker and can move really well judging by what I saw at the combine. Was he a reach, yes, but protecting THill is #1 so i understand the pick. I like the savvy veteran in Garner but Fox doesn't impress me and may need to be upgraded. I have high hopes for this Unit.
DL - this group is awesome and led by a great coach, Kacy Rodgers. Wake is a beast and hopefully stays 100% healthy. Vernon is a stud and only getting better. Good luck OT's of the NFL. I like Shelby he is a good role player. Solid run D. Jordan is suspended and though I'm dissapointed, everytime he gets on the field he performs. He'll be huge after the bye week. Fede will get his chance. Make it count kid. The DT's are scary good too. Starks Is a beast and was rated as a top DT. Pee-wee Odrick is a favorite of mine, he's solid. Earl Mitchell was a great signing. Reminds me of Starks five years ago. For those who would rather have Soliai i offer 3 points. 1st of all he was getting older, our run D wasn't that good though some of it is the LB core. Louis Reddick, a respected insider said he watched a lot of film watching big Paul get pushed around by small DT's and he may have lost a step. Earl Mitchell is up incoming, gets into a better scheme for him and last year when he was in the line-up for the Texans the run defense improved from a 4.2 down to 3.1 run average per attempt. That's a 1.1 difference. I think Mitchell will be the underated sign of the offseason. A.J. Francis and A.J. Johnson I think will win the other two spots. Love this unit.
LB - What a train wreck last year. Unlike most train wrecks, I actually looked away. This new coach and new experiment has me catiously optimistic though. Misi has always been good at doing what he's told and is under appreciated. I am hopeful for him at MLB. Ellerbe at outside will hopefully improve his game. That extra shoulder will help too. Plus its his second season in this scheme. Hopefully he learned. Wheeler was horrible last season I yelled at him more than anyone. I am hoping he improves this season. He ranked #2 as a pass rusher last year, if he can just improve his gap assignment and his tackling, he will be ok. He can come off the field on 3rd down for Jenkins who is good on pass coverage. Tripp and trusnik are the other backups. I hope Tripp will make noise and Trusnik well he's here for Special teams only cause he blows at LB.
DB- Grimes is awesome. Jimmy Wilson is good at nickel. I loved Jamar Taylor out of draft and know from personal experience that hamstrings are tricky. I'm happy to see him back and Finnegan will hopefully find it again. He bring an attitude to this team which we lacked. That right there is huge. Will Davis I think will be #4 CB. #5 will be a battle between Jalil Brown and Walt Aikens. At Safety we got Delmas and Reshad Jones with Jimmy Wilson as Delmas backup and Michael Brady Thomas will face off versus Don Jones. For those who worry about Safety, you are not alone. Reshad Jones was ehh last year and I hope he returns to 2012 form. Hopefully Coyle will put Jones in a better situation. Delmas is interesting, if his knees hold up, big if, then that's huge. He can practice, I mean he was good without practice people, with practice he can build chemistry and get used to game situations. He also brings an attitude and a needed spark we lacked last year. If he just tones down his aggresive play just a bit he could be a great sign. Loved him out of college.
Special Teams - Fields is a stud, Sturgis had a hamstring injury. He'll be fine, you know he has the leg. Denny is our LS.
That's my 53 man roster. I predict a 10-6 season this year.
