Here is some of my thoughts in regards to the Dolphins selection and draft:
* LG and MLB are the biggest needs going into the draft. LG scares me. Dallas Thomas and the free agents signed this offseason does not satisfy the gaping hole at LG. I would love to see Brandon Scherff fall Thursday. He would be outstanding fit. However, I think he just misses Miami's spot at 14. With that said, I cannot see a value at 14 to draft a guard if Scherff is gone. Where does that guard fit come in the draft? I am not quite sure. It would have to come in round two or four, I would assume. Donovan Smith? Jake Fisher? T.J. Clemmings? Jarvis Harrison? Ali Marpet? Chaz Green? B.J. Finney? Chaz Green? Josue Matias? Ty Sambrallo? Dallas Thomas cannot be a starter this season. The AFC East is simply too strong at DT to leave in the hands of Thomas. MLB is the second biggest need. MLB is not a great spot in this draft. I am hoping to see Eric Kendricks or Paul Dawson at 47. However, I have said all offseason that the team might have to use Koa Misi at MLB for one more year and should not force an early draft pick on a Stephone Anthony or a Denzel Perryman to simply say they have a Mike.
* This team is strong enough at WR to compete right now. I am not convinced a receiver at 14 can push out Landry, Stills or Jennings this season…maybe not even Matthews. I would snag a receiver, but on Saturday. I think there will be a run on receivers in round one. Some of these receivers, in a deep pool, will be there Saturday.
* I feel Todd Gurley and Melvin Gordon are two of the best players in this draft.
* This current Miami Dolphins team cannot take a chance on character risks. Between what happened with Marin/Incognito and recently with Dion Jordan. This regime must find talented football players that love the game. Hard working, high character guys are a must this week. I like Dorial Green-Beckham, but he cannot be an option for this team right now. I like(d) La'el Collins, but this unfortunate shooting of his ex is just strange and something I do not want to deal with and will distract from the football team. I cannot deal with it right now.
*** My strategy Thursday would be the following: My offseason plan called for adding building the middle of the team and to help the QB http://www.finheaven.com/showthread.php?363519-Hayden-Fox-s-2015-Offseason-Plan. Therefore, I am looking to draft Brandon Scherff, Todd Gurley and Melvin Gordon. I have explained my take on Schreff above and would certainly help the middle of the team. Gurley I feel is special RB and I do not fear the ACL. He is 20 years old and will bounce back from such an injury. A back like Gurley would assist Tannehill by giving more to the running game. With that said, Gurley will go in the top ten.
That leaves me Melvin Gordon. I love the player. He explodes to the hole as well as anyone in the draft. He can hit the big run. He will fit in a ZBS. His receiving skills and blitz pick ups are underrated. Finally, he is a player of high character…loves the game of football. Like Gurley, Gordon helps the QB.
Not only would I pick Gordon in this situation, but I also predict Miami will pick Gordon (if Scherff and Gurley are gone). They will want a skill position player and present the fans something to be excited about. I have said for awhile that Mike Tannenbaum will not be booed on Thursday night. Miami has done little in the way of finding help for Lamar Miller this offseason. RB has to be a target. Is it round one? We shall see.
* Finally, do not sleep on the current free agent market. Miami still has some flexibility with the cap. Players like Wes Welker, Jermaine Gresham, James Casey, Justin Blalock, Rob Sims, Barry Coefield, Red Bryant, Tommy Kelly and Dwight Freeney are all available. In light of Jordan's suspension, Freeney might interest me.
Give your mock draft and add your rationale if you want. The draft is almost here.
