2015 NFL Best coaches

The grandest of mediocrities, Joe Philbin is not an NFL coach. He is a shrinking violet garbed in an aqua polo and adorned with a headset. He is a man unloved by his players, outwitted by his rivals and overwhelmed by his duties. An “offensive mind,” Philbin does not call his own plays. That leaves his primary function as “leading.” This is not good because Philbin’s primary failing is leadership. Not every NFL coach is going to be Pete Carroll or Mike Ditka. Loud does not equal “lead.” But if you’re going to be the quiet type, you better have a firm grasp on the pulse of your team. This is something Philbin insisted he didn’t have when he pled ignorance again and again in the Dolphins’ “Bullygate” scandal. Philbin’s locker room was fracturing into factions, and whether it was willful or intentional, he had no idea. Once Philbin finally does discover his problems, he ships them out instead of coaching them up. Brandon Marshall and Vontae Davis have both thrived since Philbin sent them packing, while the Dolphins have spent millions and many draft picks trying to replace them.

Not that Philbin’s failures all come behind closed doors. As a game manager, his top innovation has been calling late timeouts on defense in one-score games. This brilliant tactic helped produce two wins in 2014 … for the Packers and Lions. Philbin’s other speciality is dialing up field goals. Unfortunately for Dolphins fans, only five teams had worse field-goal percentages last season. Philbin is John Harbaugh if he never won. He’s Mike Tomlin if he never showed fire. He’s Jason Garrett if he never smiled. He is the worst coach in the NFL.

Beautiful, just beautiful. Could not have said it any better myself.

 Philbin ranked last among returning coaches

Gonna have to bookmark the author of this article.

I don't think he is counting the 6 positions that just got filled as he lists them separately. But I agree with you. Philbin should be #32

 Philbin ranked last Fisher should be right behind him to among returning coaches

i think he is avg coach or lease middle of pack... Ross think Phlbin and Fisher is best coach in nfl

Eh, every coach is the worst coach in the NFL at some point. Then they win something and become the hot commodity. While I don't disagree with the author's main points, I kind of take offense to the comparisons and the idea that Joe Philbin is somehow exceptional in any way. After all, Pete Carroll called a pass play from the 1-yard line with seconds to go in the Superbowl on what easily could have been the game-winning score for Marshawn Lynch and the Seahawks. So, what, does that make Joe Philbin a Pete Carroll without the Superbowl appearances?? Total nonsense. Pete Carroll WAS Joe Philbin a little more than 15 years ago. Don't have such a short memory. Fact is just about every winning coach has been Joe Philbin at some point.

Yesterday's garbage is today's treasure, and today's garbage is yesterday's treasure.

I couldnt agree more that he has less than zero % leadership qualities. Not even trying to coach up people who actually have fire in their personalities. These are grown men and he is going to have to at some point stop acting like these guys are kids and learn how to deal with them, like a man. His coaching leaves alot to be desired but I wouldnt say its the absolute worst. Although, it is the worst when it actually counts so for that fact alone, that is why I wouldnt argue this article. Please someone email this to Ross!

While Philbin has his flaws this is just a complete assassination. I'm not about to toss Philbin amongst the greats but there are certainly coaches who are a lot worse. He should be right about 16 based on returning coaches.

You think so? I don't

They have Chuck Pagano at 16. Philbin doesn't deserve that.

If you don't factor in the new coaches, which they don't . . . . the guys directly ahead of him have only 1 season with their current teams and many of them have had success with previous teams. Philbin has 3 seasons, a sub .500 record and no playoffs. No other coach on that list has those credentials.

He deserves the spot.

Pagano would be my 15th coach despite Philbin & the Dolphins beating them head to head. Mike Zimmer has yet to prove anything to warrant the 15th spot.

I don't disagree, but these coaches with only 1 year under their belt are gonna be rated higher than a 4th year guy with a sub .500 record and no playoffs. I don't think I can name one returning coach I'd put below Joe Philbin. Even Jay Gruden deserves another season.

Many would tell you that Zimmer exceeded expectations with a rookie QB and lost the best RB in the league week 1.

Pete Carrol made the horrible call that lost the Super Bowl.
Mike McCarthy's team wilted in the NFC Championship game.
John Harbaugh's team wilted in the AFC Championship game.
John Fox's team was upset by Colts and it cost him his job.
Chuck Pagano can't seem to solve the Bill Bellicheat puzzle.
Jason Garret's team blew a late lead.
Jim Caldwell's team blew a late lead.

In the end only one head coach gets to be #1 each year. The rest all have warts.
