4-3. I guess that's better than 3-4. But with a Thursday night road game coming up, well...
- Brocktoberfest continues. He's playing the best football of his career. He's doing fine and giving the Dolphins a chance to win. Making some nice throws and clearly has command of the offense. My two big knocks on him today would be that his vertical shots were badly underthrown and that I saw him spray a couple of footballs -- Jay Cutler style -- off of his back foot in the second half. I bring this up because I think the biggest improvement in his game has been his delivery and the improved accuracy that has come from it. If he gets lax on his footwork, he will undo a lot of the progress he has made.
With that said, he played well overall. If the defense had bothered to show up, Miami could easily be 5-2 right now.
- Late in the first quarter, Miami had first and ten at the Lions' 41 yard line, trailing 7-0. After a false start penalty, Adam Gase simply gave up on the drive. Run, shallow crosser, run, punt. At least try, guys. No matter who the quarterback is, this is one thing that frustrates me about Adam Gase. Early in the game, he is content to play it safe and punt. That is not going to work when you are giving up 30+ points per game.
- The other thing that's troubling for the Dolphins offense is the anemic ground game we saw in the first half. Two and a half good rushing performances in seven games isn't going to cut it.
- The injuries just keep piling up. This team may have a winning record, but it's going to be tough to keep winning as players keep getting sent to the training room.
- The defense was terrible. Enough said. Poor tackling, poor coverage, poor everything. Sure, there are injuries to contend with, but does anyone on this Earth think that the Dolphins have a good defensive scheme? Does anyone think the Wide 9 is a good idea? Is Matt Burke still mumbling about run fits?
- The walls behind each end zone at Hard Rock Stadium: Move 'em back.
- Bobby McCain flagged for pass interference in the third quarter, but there was clearly contact both ways on that play. What is McCain supposed to do? Let the offensive player push him to the ground and then walk in for an easy score? And then the Dolphins get the gift returned later on a 3rd and 11. Osweiler throws a ball into heavy traffic, 8 yards short of the marker, and Miami somehow gets a free first down out of it.
The bottom line for me is that the Dolphins offense just isn't producing enough points -- especially early -- to overcome a defense that appears to be disintegrating before our eyes. When the defense isn't producing turnovers, they are absolutely, positively, horrifyingly bad. And unfortunately for the team, there aren't a lot of former Dolphins offensive coordinators and Blaine Gabberts out there to bully on a weekly basis.
After a promising 3-0 start, the Dolphins' season is rapidly approaching disaster territory. And now, just what the doctor ordered: A road game on Thursday night! Oh, no, wait, that's not a good thing. Well, at least Miami will get to host a Super Bowl. Not going to be playing in one, but the city will get to host one. Cool.
