The Miami Dolphins improve to 5-4, are a half game back in the wild card race, and are somehow very much alive in the playoff race.
- In the off-season, the NFL claimed that they wanted fewer commercials and more football. Actual result feels like more commercials and less football.
- 2nd and 3 after a beastly run by Frank Gore, a swing pass followed by a stretch run. Result: 4th and 3. Guys, it's three yards. North and south. North and south.
- Kiko Alonso with more volume third down stops short of the sticks. And volume interceptions. And volume passes broken up.
- I've seen a lot of shoulder tackles from this defense all season. Saw them again today. Guys, you have arms. Use them. That kid on the Seahawks who has one hand wraps up better than you.
- The Jets were just what the doctor ordered for this abysmal Miami defense. Todd Bowles is going to get a fruit basket from Jets ownership for being willing to take the lumps of Sam Darnold's rookie season, but that's about all he's going to get other than a pink slip this off-season. The Jets are a poorly coached mess.
- With that said, I take nothing away from the Miami defense today. You can only play the guys on your schedule, and the Dolphins were scheduled to play the Jets at home today. The Dolphins offense sputtered and was not good at all, but the Dolphins' defense was dominant for four quarters. The only topic of conversation that involves Matt Burke this week should be about how well his defense has played today.
- Right tackle is a need. I liked the idea of re-signing Ja'Wuan James, because he's been good when healthy, but this season he's had a couple of disaster games and once again, he hasn't been able to stay healthy. Time to move on, unfortunately.
- I'm keeping an eye on Baltimore. Rumor is that Harbaugh is on his way out there, one way or another. I think that Steve Ross, who apparently loves the Harbaughs, is going to be very interested in bringing one of them to Miami. Personally? I think it's fair to give Gase a pass on account of these brutal injuries, but I would not object to John Harbaugh if he is available and wants the job.
- Jason Sanders has been a good find. Haack is also doing a much better job on punts after some early shanks. Good coverage, too. If there is a coaching change coming up here, I truly hope that the next head coach keeps Darren Rizzi. Hell, I hope Darren Rizzi gets interviewed for the job.
- Wanny Warrior of the day: JEROME BAKER. You step up and take the game in your hands and win it when nobody else wants to find the end zone? You're the man.
- Honorable mention to TJ McDonald. With what appeared to be a game-icing interception in hand, McDonald sees that there's a lot of traffic in front of him and he's not going to score, so he wraps the football up and hits the turf. It can be hard to be fully cognizant of the risk/reward situation in the heat of the moment, but McDonald assessed it quickly and correctly.
2-1 in the division and we have a winning record after 9 games. It ain't over yet, folks!
