I have loved that song for 50 years, but it wasn't until this year, that I learned the actual lyrics. Listening to a song on the radio back then, it was easy to misunderstand the lyrics of some artists and songs. I always thought he sang, "Sing women, sing for the year, sing for the laugh and sing for the tear...". I picture a chorus of nuns in habits, singing about "the year, the laugh, and the tear." But the "laugh" was on me. It was me that was supposed to be singing, not the nuns. "Sing with me ("wimme"), sing for the year..." implying that I, the listener, should be singing, like at a concert.... Oooops!
