How do people see the contract issue being resolved?
Will Ross/the front office (I have to admit I don't know who has the final say) cave and make Jonah Savaiinaea's contract fully guaranteed as the Texans and the Browns have done with Jayden Higgins and Carson Schwesinger?
How will the other owners/front offices react to the demands of their 2nd rounder picks?
Could we see a 'merry-go-round' of Round 2 players being waived and then perhaps picked up by other teams and signed to far cheaper contracts than a 2nd rounder would get or even 2nd Round picks ending up unemployed?
Your thoughts?

I think your above paragraph is likely to be true and that the Dolphins FO will not "fully guarantee" many, if any 2nd rounders contract.

Exceptions that may be made, would be due to a players demonstrated skill set within our system in training camp; but not due to any particular draft position.

The whole league is basically at a stalemate right now waiting for another domino to fall before they figure out how to proceed. They will all be signed eventually though - nothing crazy like the merry-go-round hypothetical you posed. I would expect those dominos to start falling sooner than later.
So who will give way - the players or management?

 my hope is that the players win out - that's who I generally side with in contract situations. Just give the kids their damned money. The precedent has already been set by the Texans and then the Browns, so whether it happens this year or next, it's only a matter of time before all 2nd round picks get full guarantees. The league is obviously struggling to accept this new paradigm - that's the whole reason for this standoff. But they're going to have to accept it sooner than later.

I’m also interested to see how the Shemar Stewart contract dispute ends up…Bengals have no leg to stand on and are just being cheap imo
Bengals ownership is ridiculous. They played chicken with Ja'Marr Chase right up until 90 minutes before kickoff of their week one game against the Pats last year, they lost that game and Chase really didn't get going until week three. He blamed his slow start on the protracted negotiations with the Bengals. Idiotic.

Since when have the Texans or the Browns been credited with anything but bad management. - LOL

We will probably see the second round draftees start to get signed more or less in the order that they were selected, as each contract is probably going to be contingent on the numbers of the previous one. But I think it would be safe to say that the contract will be fully guaranteed for at least the first half of the second round. That just seems to be the way that it’s going and it’s not necessarily a bad thing for the players.

I expect guaranteed contracts to be a big sticking point in the next CBA.

I think the owners are not going to be happy with the outcome.

I also think the big disparity between vet min and the huge numbers a few player's make needs to be addressed. No way should a vested vet be paid so much less than many unproven rookies. You would think mid and bottom tier players would rebel within the union.

I'm all for taking the slight of hand out of contracts, as well as getting rid of the void years BS.

Do you think the new NIL rules will play a factor into how much money these rookies get compared to the vested vets? I’d imagine it would be some type of factor considering it wasn’t around for the last CBA.

Also agree on the void years, it’s a bullshit loophole that the Eagles and a few others are exploiting and shouldn’t be allowed. I’m sure eventually they will have to pay the piper but who knows

Until the Bengals come around and screw things up by adding crazy clauses to the contract and trying to not guarantee all 4 years …I hope this happens to them for being cheap asses

We know this is not about the money. Both sides know that Stewart would be signing a four-year, $18.94 million rookie contract that's fully guaranteed. The 17th overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft was complaining because the Bengals threw a curveball in their contract negotiations with him by adding new language to his deal that the Bengals didn't use with their past two first-round picks. The team essentially wants to add a default clause, according to former NFL team executive Andrew Brandt. This would allow the Bengals to void future guarantees if he were to get into trouble (this could be a suspension for on-field conduct, off-field conduct, an arrest or anything else the Bengals can think of). Normally, a first-round pick gets a fully guaranteed four-year contract, but this would give the Bengals some wiggle room to potentially get out of that if he were to get into trouble at any point during his four-year deal.
  • He could re-enter the NFL Draft. If Stewart doesn't sign his contract and he doesn't play football at all in 2025, he could re-enter the NFL Draft in 2026. If he went this route, it means that any team could draft him next year, except for the Bengals. If a player were to successfully pull off a power move like this, it could throw a wrench into the future of the draft. It would set up potential situations where a player could sit out if he got drafted by a team he didn't want to play for. Stewart would essentially have until November to make a decision on this. He's allowed to sign his rookie contract until the Tuesday following Week 10. If he doesn't sign it by that date, then he's not allowed to play in 2025. There's another upside to this strategy: If Stewart went undrafted in 2026 -- maybe his situation with the Bengals scares teams away -- then he would become an undrafted free agent following the 2026 draft and he'd be free to sign with any team.
  • He could ask for a trade. If the Bengals won't give him the contract language he wants, maybe someone else will. There is a unique deadline in place for any team that wants to trade a rookie: A deal has to be made at least 30 days before the start of the regular season, so a decision would have to be made here by Aug. 5 or Aug. 8 (The CBA isn't clear if it's 30 days before the start of the first game of the regular season or 30 days before the Bengals' first game of the season). The Bengals don't like being bullied, so this scenario would probably be unlikely, but it would be an option

Void years are the biggest joke in both NFL and MLB now. Ohtani's contract is an embarrassment. The Eagles have built a monster mortgaging the next decade. According to a Feb 2025 USA today article, the Eagles were ranked #1 in the NFL in void money, with $390.4M in void years. SF was second, almost $185M less. Miami had $70.6M. Jalen Hurts has ~$100M in void years, AJ Brown with $50M, Lane Johnson, Mailata, Barkley and Smith all $30M+.
