the way i look at it there are 2 tiers of tackles in the first 2 rounds

tier 1-jake long
tier 2- guys like clady, otah, williams and cherilus

i can see jake being dominant while guys in the second tier being effective to solid starters right away.
after researching team needs and various mock drafts i came to a very real conclusion that cherilus, the guy everyone wants with 32 and will justify us taking c. long, may, and IMO probobly, wont be there at 32.
who will be, Nicks and Baker(terrible pro day) who i think, after watching film will not be effective in a starting role right away. there fore that brings into question how far is j. long's skill set from a guy like nicks or baker. i feel it is way more substanchal than chris long to say a lawrence jackson or any other olb that could be found 2b, 3 ect. if you are going to use a pick on a T you don't want to have to use a pick next year fixing the mistake, t is one of the most key positions in football and very few times are marquie T's available in FA, unlike DE/olbs. baker and nicks scare me as i can see shades of bust in each of them, after watching their film. i have also studied film from j. Long and at his very poorest i can project he would still be an upgrade over those 3 tier available guys. im not saying that jake long is joe thomas, but the fact that matt ryan isn't peyton manning is stopping ryan sopporters just as the fact that chris long isn't shawn merriman( w/o the seriods) doesnt stop c long sopporters from thinking their guy should be our pick. to me it boils down to our team as of right now we have above average to average pass rushing ( jt and a healthy joey porter, who is returning to the d that made him great in pitt) compared to an o line that stands like this lt-carey ( pro bowl at RT, IMO) lg-smiley c-satele rg-mormimo (great depth not a starter yet) rt- Tony saparno (jk,) but u get my point. we have a talented young qb with lots of potential we have a great and balanced running attack, we have a reciever that, given time, could out race any secondary in football. now what would help all those things at once. Jake Long.

"substanchal"? What is the meaning of this word? I looked in the dictionary and could not find it anywhere. I think you might have meant substantial.:D

Actually there isn't a whole lot of difference between Jake Long and Ryan Clady, who I think will be a better fit at left tackle. I really wonder if Long didn't have as many tattoos than Motley Crue, would he have such a big fan club? And you left out some very important prospects on the offensive line - Brandon Albert (OG/T) and Carl Nicks (T). Albert may even sneak into the top ten after some really good workouts. I think Nicks would be a great pickup for us at #32 for a RT.

i have nicks in there and i didnt put albert in because he is only a guard especially in the NFL. Nick has character issues and IMO he has a large chance of being a bust in the NFL. even if you want to put clady in a the same class as jake, jake is still better and doesnt change the arguement that a tackle in round one will be way more benificial than one in round 2 and what were you saying with his tats?

Internet spelling continues to amaze me on a daily basis.

I wouldn't exactly say that Jake Long is in a tier above Ryan Clady and Jeff Otah

I've been souring on both Nicks and Baker for awhile now. Baker's positives just seem to keep falling away the longer the offseason goes on. As for Nicks, I was listening to Pat Kirwan's radio show the other day and he was really down on the fact that Nicks only had 12 college starts. I think his exact words were, "12 starts? Come back here in two years, we won't even remember what team drafted him." Hard to argue with Kirwan. Tackle's not exactly a position you can just teach a guy in the pros.

I think at this point if you're looking to draft a tackle in the second, you're looking at Gosder Cherildus, and maybe Anthony Collins.

two big differences from the combine:
bench press - Long 37, Clady 24
Wonderlic - Long 26, Clady 13

Are we seriously posting up WONDERLIC scores?

One other thing to consider........if MIA takes J Long it probably dictates that C Long, Mcfadden or Gholston ends up with the Jets. I dont know that teams actually think in those terms but I think it is something to consider. The Rams appear ready to take C Long or Gholston the Falcons seem to be focusing on Dorsey, Ryan or J Long, the Raiders are focusing on J Long Mcfadden, or Dorsey and the Chiefs will take a a OT or DT. If we don't take one of the OLB's/DE the Rams will take one and the other will fall to the Raiders or Jets and if the Raiders take the other OLB/DE that will leave Mc Fadden for the Jets. Something to Ponder???

Reps and tests are great but they don't measure football players. Do you think that guys like Erik Williams, Larry Allen and Nate Newton got great wonderlic scores?

if I had to choose a 2nd round OT, if he lasts, it would have to be Anthony Collins.

if he lasts

That's why alot of us want J.Long 1st overall because if we don't we have to pray some decent OT is still available at 32. Then you have to compare that leftover OT to the other talent available, how can anyone say we should take a OT instead of a stud CB or WR for example. Reaching for need is a draft killer I always hear from people, so going with that theory we may not even get a chance to draft an O-Lineman.

Let's take care of business with J.Long and continue to go BPA the rest of the way.

But Jake Long really isn't the bpa at the #1 spot so it goes against what your saying about reaching for need killing your draft. Taking jake long would be a perfect example of reaching for a need. J Long is a good player but with the #1 pick if your not getting the BEST player its a reach, and i dont see long being the best player.
