Does anyone know if that was pre planned or if they drew it up at half time? It would be tempting to go with that over a linebacker corps made up of Sheppard, Tripp, Trusnik, and Jenkins at least until Misi and Wheeler return. The only issue would be lack of depth at the D line to an extent, but even looking over the roster now Gaston and Johnson could play DEs in a 3-4, Odrick, Mitchell, and Starks could all play NT (along with Odrick and Starks playing DE). Shelby and Fede might be limited to the nickel but we play nickel most of the time anyway.

It came down to LB depth. After losing Ellerbe and Misi they didn't have enough guys to play LB. All those guys are special teamers too. And Wake, Starks, Mitchell, Odrick have all played in a 3-4 and we use Vernon at times like a 3-4 OLB.

Did not notice we ran 3-4.

Looked more of a hybrid 4-2-5

I saw some hybrid 4-3 with Odrick/Starks/Mitchell in with OV standing up sort of like playing Wide 9 DE

But a true 3-4? No...

Then again what team doesnt run hybrid stuff these days.

Pretty much agree . . . I saw a lot of "hybrid" looks, but nothing that was a direct 3-4 type of defense. All teams tend to run some sort of hybrid defense and it makes a lot of sense for Miami to run one as well, especially when Jordan and Jones come back.

It looked more like a 5-2...I think ti was what threw the pats off a bit

It was a 34 Bear front. This was the main adjustment that started driving the penetration as Mitchell went nose and was eating up the interior.

There was also a little 43 Over/Under look a la Seattle - giving that 50 front look.

Correct

This is Miami's new 5-2 look. Wake and Vernon become OLBers. It is new, unique & beautiful. pic.twitter.com/xnxgrTVcez

Just read Barry Jackson's Buzz and that's exactly what Coyle said. We ran 5 D-lineman and 2 linebackers most of the 2nd half. Trusnik played 66 snaps, Jenkins 59 snaps, Freeny only 14 snaps. Misi played 17 snaps before getting hurt and Ellerbe played 19 snaps before he went out.

McCain played 15 snaps and all but 2 were at DE.

Credit to Coyle to be able to switch to that so easily means he knows his personnel and has stuff in his bag of tricks. I know a lot of the local beat writers want them to switch to 3-4 from our base 4-3 but when you are able to form up in different ways at will is how awesome our defense is and once we have a lead in a game, he is going to release the hounds on that woeful ass team

I have always been a fan of a multiple D. All kinds of formations, never really know who is coming. The D played great. 5-2 was giving them trouble.

I thought I was seeing a Bear 46 front. Imagine using that w/ 5 DL when Dion returns?

The 43 over/under can be used w/ alot of D schemes i.e. the Tampa Cover 2 used it as well as the Steel curtain back in the 70's.... hard to believe potsburgh ran something other than 3-4 isn't it kids? :d-day:

Dion who?! :troll:

In the 4th Miami played a lot of basic nickle defense, 4 linemen, 2 linebackers and 5 db's.
