Calais Campbell is a guy that I bet Parcells and Ireland have identified as a guy who can be their Chris Canty.

at 6'8" 280, he has room to grow into a 310 pound DE easily. If Ireland some how manages to move back out of that #1 pick, I wouldn't be surprised to see this guy drafted high.

i happen to like campbell. Even thou he didn't have that great of year he reminds me of a young JT. If the phins do that trade with Dallas i could see them drafting him in the 22 or 28 pick

i do like this kid too... but he isn't gonna be a sack machine. if he works on firing low (getting under the O-Line), and holding his ground when double teamed, he can be a great asset against the run (which is highly needed in the 3-4). he definitely needs to bulk up though, but he has great legs.

I think everyone one here assumes we will be in a 3-4.

the more and more I read about it everyday, the more I am convinced we may be running a 46 D instead.

who knows?

I disagree, he WILL get sacks. The reason he didnt dominate in the pass game last year was because he is regularly double teamed AND chipped off the line by a runningback.

3-4 DEs are space holders whose job is to eat up double teams to allow the OLB to get favorable one on one match ups. They are responsible for two gaps in run defense as well. Calais Campbell is more suited for the 4-3, but if he adds some more upper body strength he could play the 3-4 end. As for getting sacks you don't judge 3-4 ends by sacks as that is not their job.

no thanks.

even as a Hurricane booster, this kid didn't impress me this year.

Phillips is a much better prospect at S, IMO

This is exactly right, especially, in the flavor of 3-4 that will eventually be implemented in Miami. Parcell's 3-4 DEs are 2 gappers. Phillips 3-4, DEs are one gappers that will slant, stunt and zone blitz.

Campbell is a typical boom or bust candidate. If he gains some weight and learns some more technique, then he can be a boom player. If he does not gain weight and etc. them he will bust. I am a Cane fan and saw Campbell taken away from offenses that schemed to take him out of the play. In our system he will need to learn how to handle double teams and hold on the point of attack. I would take a fly on Campbell with a mid-late 1st round pick. I am interested to see what he benches and his timed speed at the combine. He might not bench high with those long arms though.

Another name to keep in mind is Kendall Langford

How do you know we are running a 3-4?
Look at the coaching staff that has been put in place, they all have a background in the 3/4 and we hired an inside LB coach and an outside LB coach. That's usually what you do when you plan on running the 3/4 defense. ;)

I love CC. I am a U fan though lol. I think he will be a pretty good player and I wouldn't be disappointed if we got him. I wonder if he could be like a Justin Tuck? I would love to find one like him. The dream rolls on ........

Merling is a type of player we have to have an eye on. He is both a pass rusher and a run stopper. He is big and agile. What will his times speed be and his bench be at the combine. Him and K. Balmer I would love to see slip to us. The only way we could sniff these players is trading out twice in the 1st rd. No way would they be there for us at #32

other BIG players to consider in the 2nd-4th rd. range upfront are:

DE: Lawrence Jackson, Jason Jones, Kendall Langford

OLB: Quentin Groves, Erin Henderson, Shawn Crable, Bruce Davis, Beau Bell, Cliff Avril, Tommy Blake, Jeremy Thompson, Ezra Butler

DT/NT: Pat Sims, Red Bryant, Trevor Laws, Dre Moore, Ahtyba Rubin, Frank Okam, Keilen Dykes

The more I look at the list, the more I would want Chris Long as our #1 pick because I see a lot more depth with OLB (Pass Rushers) and DT, than I do with BIG DE.

After C. Long, Phillip Merling, C. Campbell I do not see a lot of BIG pass rushers out of the DE position.

I see us going C.Long/ J. Long and if we fall in love with M.Ryan with the #1 pick.

#32 could be trade out spot, but if we stay put I see: OLB, CB, OT coming with this pick

and #58 (or whatever it is) go TE, OLB, WR, DT (best available) and 1st pick in day two another trade out pick.

We will have at least 10-12 picks when the draft is all set and done.

We will hit on many needs, go big and plenty. Then take skill positions later in day two.
