[h=3]With Mario Williams signing tonight, the questions now turn to how Miami will surround him at defensive end. A few points:[/h][h=3]1) Yahoo reports tonight that the Dolphins are expected to remove the transition tag from Olivier Vernon. This would be welcomed news to Vernon, who doesn't oppose staying in Miami if the money is right but is fully aware that the Dolphins don't want to pay him what other teams might.[/h][h=3]2) In a perfect world, the Dolphins would prefer to use Cameron Wake as a pass-rush specialist in a rotation with Mario Williams and potentially William Hayes, who remains a top Dolphins target.[/h][h=3]Whether the Dolphins will bid enough to land Hayes remains the question. But the Dolphins want a third defensive end who can play a ton of snaps, especially on run downs.[/h]CBS and NFL Net reported today that Wake is staying with the Dolphins, even with Williams' addition. We reported last week that the Dolphins have told people they intend to keep Wake, though they've stopped short of giving him that assurance.
• The Dolphins would like to upgrade longterm over weakside linebacker Jelani Jenkins if they can because they don't view him as an ideal fit in their defense, even though he's cheap and productive.
They remain interested in Bengals free agent Vincent Rey, among others. But Jenkins would remain a starter if Miami can't find someone better at a reasonable price.
• The Dolphins have shown interest in re-signing defensive tackle C.J. Mosley, who was released Dec. 1 after injuring his calf. If that happens, Miami could return with mostly the same group of defensive tackles: Ndamukong Suh, Earl Mitchell, Jordan Phillips and Mosley.
• According to the Houston Chronicle, the Texans have zeroed in on Lamar Miller and reports he would cost$6.5 million per year --- more than what Miami is willing to offer. The Dolphins would have had interest in Chris Ivory, but not at the price Jacksonville agreed tonight to pay him ($6 million per).
If Miller leaves, Miami will look to find a running back at a reasonable price from a group potentially including Bilal Powell, Ronnie Hillman, and maybe Matt Forte, plus restricted free agent C.J. Anderson(has a low-round Broncos tender) and Alfred Morris (some inside the Dolphins like Morris).

Outside of Jones and Suh, everybody's seat on the defense should be feeling very warm right about now.

Pretty annoying how Jordan Cameron is going to make the same money as Lamar Miller who is our home grown every down back.

I swear if we lose the #1 free agent RB for a mere 6.5 M . . . :smad:

I gotta admit I don't know much about William Hayes, but really, is he that much better than Derrick Shelby? I mean DE looks pretty set right now with Wake, Williams, Shelby, and Fede compared to all the other needs we have.

Also, upgrading Jelani Jenkins wouldn't have been at the top my list either.

The crazy money that is floating around by teams needing to get to 89% is unbelievable. We did an adequate job bringing Mario Williams to fill the void of losing OV since we can't afford him. Especially seeing Jackson getting $15m a season and JPP getting $10.5. I really hate that it seems we will lose Miller as I think he has a shot to be a 2000 total yard guy in the right system but paying $6.5m for potential is nuts. Even Ivory, who was losing carries at the end of the year, is talking $6m. It is going to be interesting to see how we address RB, G, DT, LB, CB and S this offseason while keeping us in good cap standing for the future. Time will tell if Tannenbaum has learned anything from his experience in New York but we'll find out as soon as all the details are out on this Maxwell/Alonso deal.

Derron Lee is in play big time. Love that player.

My issue is the lack of urgency at the guard position. We have heard rumblings and interests but you can't sign a guy until he comes in for a visit. No meetings scheduled so far. Scary that they don't put that a priority over the trade and other dealings. I understand they want to shake the defense up but this team will be heavily reliant on the offense this season. Need to get their priorities in order.

No to Morris, Yes to Powell or Hillman.

Mosley is like 80.....surprised there was no talk of secondary of line help. You have to goout and sign atleast 1 guard ideally Alex Boone.

I wonder if signing back CJ Mosley means no Paul Soliai signing - was hoping to bring him back next to Suh with Phillips in rotation.

And if the RB market is setting itself at $6.5 million shouldn't MIA wake up and up the offer to LAMAR?? Doug Martin has to be in the $7+ and I imagine Forte to be at $6 million + too.

I can live with every other move this offseason, cutting Grimes, letting OV walk but letting your 24 yr ascending RB walk out the door over $1-2 million a year difference seems unwise.

Intriguing that they mentioned Rey. I am happy they arent happy with Jenkins. It shows the lessons learned last year on having bad LBs. Jenkins can be quality depth. Is it possible we get Rey, Illoka (spelling) and Pac ?
