1.) Drafting Sean Smith

  • I think Sean Smith was excellent value at #61. He possesses a rare size/speed ratio, and his overall atletic ability is top-notch. I think he defensive back skills are good and will only get better - lots of upside here.
2.) Making a coaching change at offensive line

  • While Jake Long played great, the rest of the guys were just ok. The pass blocking was solid during the season and fell apart during the playoffs. The run blocking was below average too much of the time. Plus, reports indicated that Mike Maser was not an effective communicator/motivator, and got too cranky too easily.
3.) Bringing back Jason Taylor at a bargain basement price

  • What a series of mind games, posturing, and subsequent transactions by Parcells & Co. during the past year in dealing with Jason. They stayed patient and then fleeced the Redskins when their starting DE went down in training camp. Then, they played the leverage game wonderfully in getting him back. As a situational 3-4 pass rusher, I couldn't think of anyone better for the money.

Disliked

1.) Signing Jake Grove over Jason Brown

  • Brown is a younger, bigger, more talented version of Grove. I don't understand passing him up. Grove may prove to have a better year or couple of years, but on paper, this looks like a clear loss. And don't tell me that it was all about the money - because Grove got plenty and the Fins are in decent cap shape.
2.) Passing on Rey Maualuga and Hakeem Nicks for Vontae Davis

  • I may be way off on this, but initially, I was bummed that we passed on these two in favor of Davis. Time will tell...
3.) Not signing a veteran wide receiver (Torry Holt?)

  • This may still change, but I thought it would have been a good idea to briing in a veteran that would push for playing time while serving as a mentor for the very young WR corps.

cant really ARGUE with any of those.
although i like the vonte pick i dont see nicks as being a big time player but who knows

I agree with some of what you said. The passing of Rey Maualuga was big miss, but I think Vontae is going to be good. Jake Grove is a better bargain than Jason Brown. And I think the FO thought center was our biggest hole, since we have justin smiley coming back next year, why get a guard who is in my opinion over paid.

Here is my list:

1. Drafting Pat White- this guy is going to be a very versatile player for us. he can run the 'cat, he can catch the ball, he can run and best of all, he can be a GREAT qb. What other college QB can say he won all 4 bowl games? And he has a cannon for an arm. We have our Michael Vick, minus the stupidity

2. Not trading Ronnie- Ronnie is in a contract year. This can be a very good year for him. He knows Miami may potentially keep him, or he may get a big pay from another team next season. I think he will be fired up and Ricky will keep pushing him to be better. Notice Ronnie's beste seasons have been when Ricky is with him.

3. Signing Crowder, Bell, Wilson, Wake, Taylor- these guys will be a catalyst for success on defense for us. Wilson is a big upgrade at safety and having the likes of Bell with him gives us a pretty potent safety lineup. Signing taylor will allow cameron wake to develop as a player in this league. Wake will learn from one of the best versatile DE/LB in the game. Crowder is a horse and can only get better from here.

Things I didn't like:

1. Not trading for Boldin/Edwards- We need a big play WR. Ginn hasn't blossomed into one...yet..and he needs time to develop. I think adding one of those two guys would solidify our WR corp and have a guy who can take a small gain into a big one. I would prefer Boldin, but bringing Edwards back with Henne would be big for the future.

2. Not finding a playmaking tightend- Fasano picks his spots and so does David Martin. But we need a guy who was like McMichael who can make big plays over the middle and be big between the 20s.

Sorry, but I'm not interested in a guy who blocks like crap, drops almost every pass, and beats his wife.

Vontae Davis was the best pick possible IMO.

Sean Smith was a better value though.

I agree we should've paid the difference to Jason Brown instead of hoping Jake Grove puts it all together on a real team.

I don't mind what we did with the WR position because I love Ted Ginn and I think he's going to explode soon so I am fine with getting guys to fill roles so long as they do it.

Liked
1) The Gibril Wilson signing was a nice surprise. Very good safety, should be an upgrade over Hill.
2) Cameron Wake
3) Not getting caught up in any bidding wars for high priced free agents.

Disliked
1) The majority of the draft. I was upset with the Davis pick, especially with some of the guys still on the board. I thought White was picked too highly (I know he might have been gone by our next pick...let someone else overspend on him then). The only picks I really liked were Smith and Clemons.

2) The whole Samson Satele trade. I felt like the Raiders really got a bargain there. He would have been worth much more as a backup to us than the lowly compensation we got back for him. I don't care if he didn't fit the Parcells mold...he would have been a very serviceable backup with a lot of versatility.

3) If Anquan Boldin was really available for a 2nd rounder as rumor has it, then I'm upset we passed. I guess five wildcat snaps a game from Pat White is more valuable than a Pro-Bowl wideout who would perfectly fit our offense.

I still do not understand why so many people are chirpin' for Boldin? This team has more important holes to fill before getting a $8mil WR.

In an ideal world, we can have a superstar at every position, but this the real world, and until we fill all the holes in the team now, don't even consider bringing in a guy that would be considered a LUXURY (and not a necessity).

agree with all but the davis one. i think hakeem, and rey would have been good, but v. davis will be a good #1 corner. I especially agree with the one about grove over brown. he would have cost only a little more and he wanted to play here. good post

Three I liked:
1. Drafting of Sean Smith and the small school prospects later in the draft.

2. Heavily addressing the secondary with high draft picks and FA's. Time will tell whether they were the right players, but I liked the effort.

3. Fleecing the Skins for the rental of Jason Taylor and then re-signing him.

Two I didn't like
1. Passing up on a quality starter for a situational gimic player like Pat White. He has small hands and hasn't even ever been tried at WR, so to call him a projection there would be doing a disservice to the word project. He is no Slash, he is a running QB and our system doesn't really cater to that. If it did, we would never have traded Satele. He is a very short QB, and while the occasional Flutie or Brees defies the odds, I don't think White will ever be a franchise QB. He can be productive in the wildcat, yes, but that is a gimic offense capitalizing on lack of preparation from defenses. Last year they learned to ignore the pass and stack the line against the rush to bring it back down to mediocrity, so yes, we'll put more wrinkles into it like passes to Jake Long, bombs to Tedd Ginn, option running, statues of liberty, etc.. But all in all, it's going to fully play out by the end of this season, and while White will have one good rookie season, defenses will require him to read coverages and progressions and make throws into tight windows ... and I don't see him excelling at those things. We could have had any number of good starting caliber players at that position, and IMHO, we chose poorly.

2. Drafting two mediocre WR prospects. I'm disappointed more in Turner--who will not even fill a specials team role--being drafted so early. At least Hartline was drafted later and should contribute on special teams.

I agree with all this and would add that Grove and Brown are both upgrades over Satele. I would rather have Brown, but Ireland deserves some credit for setting the limit at $6 million and sticking to it.
also, I'm more concerned with not getting a young NT than not signing a veteran WR.

Three things i liked:

1) Loaded up on DB's-no holes there-lots of talent
2) Jason Taylor means depth at OLB and DE and a mean-*** sack total
3) Vernon Carey signed and getting a few more OL-even the kid from GT-OL should be awesome and make the wildcat even more dangerous.

three things I didnt like:
1) Mel Kiper and his stupid-*** bloviating
2) letting the cb go to Denver(forget his name right now)
3) I cant think of another one.

goodman.
Denver seemed to fix their secondary now though
champ goodman and B dawk should be nice for them

yea but that is a very old secondary. i hope denver wins a championship soon otherwise they will be out of contention for years to come.

I am going to assume that you mean that in the situation of Miami no longer being in Super Bowl contention and, if Denver is, you hope Goodman gets a ring. Is this a correct assessment of your statement of hoping someone other than the Dolphins wins the Super Bowl? Also, teams can be in contention 2-3 years after beginning a rebuilding process. You don't have to look that far to see that.
