With the new up tempo offense that Sherman is bringing in, its going to be important that the offense moves the chains. The west coast relies on mostly short-medium timing passes and YAC. So with the current roster in mind, which pretty much lacks any YAC ability whatsoever and also void of any surefire great play from the QB position, we're going to get stuck with more of our fair share of 3rd down conversions. How do you guys think the Fins will handle this and what player will make the most impact in those situations?
I think Fasano and Bess might be the targets in thoise situations this year with Clay making some big plays outta 3 and shorts...

3rd downs are always a key, no matter what offensive system.

If it plays out like that, be prepared for a steady diet of Reggie Bush bubble screens :tubes:
Followed by out routes to the TE. If Clay can crack the lineup and actually produce then I'd feel better.

I think Clay is a lock to make the lineup, but I dont see him as a 3rd down go to guy. I know its very unlikely but if Tannehill gets on the field, it should earn respect for the QB draw from opposing defenses too IMO.

I'm not ready to anoint Tannehill the "scrambler" tag just yet. Plus in the WCO a running QB is way down the priority list: finding the open man matters most.

Captain obvious to the rescue! At least read the frakin post...

I did read the post.

Lots of short and intermediate passes ..... how does this equate to having more 3rd downs than other offense systems? How many yards do you define as short or intermediate? You talk as if all we'll be averaging 2-3 yard pass plays.

Nanee had 167 YAC yards in 2011 (6th in the NFL) btw .....

In Davone Bess' career 1158 yards of his 2668 total have been YAC (43.4%). He will without a doubt have a chance to increase that more than at any other time given the offense we're running.

Also if you look at the lists, it's comprised of a lot of TE's and backs. It's clear not to pin too much of the YAC responsibility on the WR's only. With guys like Bush, Miller, Fasano, etc ..... I'm not sweating that one bit.

You cant just look at the system, Im talking about the QBs running it. Im looking at this team and I expect alot of inacurate and dropped passes... just being realistic here, and with those come alot of 3rd downs.

this o is gonna be about getting into 3rd and shorts...and with this wr core we're gonna need it...3rd and longs are gonna be trouble

i expect a lot of the quick short passing game to the wrs and a lot of passes to the te's and backs...ball out of hand in a hurry

Why should we expect a lot of dropped passes? We got rid of the main culprit(Marshall).

In looking at the splits, I don't see this huge worry about executing the short to intermediate areas. You speak as if both veterans (Moore & Garrard) are dreadful. Now they are not on the level of Brady, Brees, or Rodgers .... and could stand to improve a few % points.

The key to 3rd down conversion rate is what you do on 1st and 2nd down. In 2008 the Dolphins threw the David Lee wildcat on people which created alot of 3rd and short situations. This, along with a very efficient QB like Pennington for shorter passing plays, made Miami's 3rd down rate quite high.

If the offense is lethargic and sputters on 1st and 2nd down (IE- if we can't run the ball well or other areas like horrid WR play) then 3rd down won't matter. It will all come down to what the Dolphins accomplish on 1st and 2nd downs. So that is the real key.

For once I'd like to see the offense open up and go for more on 1st down with the passing game. Thank god Sparano is gone with his run first (and ONLY RUN) mentality on every first down. In this day and age you better mix it up a hell of a lot better than that total fool Sparano did

you might get your wish greyboy...philbin says he wants to get splash plays for chunk yards on offense...sounds like he wants to be aggressive...so even though all signs point to me at least to a lot of dink and dunk 15 play drives down the field with these wrs especially i think you'll see us take some shots when the opportunity presents itself...

and of course the tempo may take some teams by surprise and we take advantage of some blown coverages etc...

I always wonder why the playaction was so bad in miami with ronne, Rickey and Reggie while Tony was there.
hopefully they dont run, run passs punt !
also the quick slant to a WR is never used enough - reggie wayne and marvin harrsion made a killing off of it, miami doesnt call it enough esp on short yardage.
it would always be a 2TE - fasano an some slow TE ( haynos, Masturd, sperry ect) that could not catch a cold, with 1 WR and 2 rb- it would be a horrible Play call that made me scream at the Tv --
i really hope this year offense is more entertaining!

Indeed...... You have to hit in the running game to avoid these situations.
No one has mentioned that importance.

Dan Henning and David Lee had zero ideas how to develop a QB.
