Interesting note. Arizona is a 4-3 base D as well.

Seems the fins have far more talent on the D line than at the LB position.

I wonder if given our roster strengths and talent levels on D, that we wouldnt have been better served lining up in a 4-3 scheme as the base D.

What would the starting line up look like?

Fins must find a dominant NT if we're going to be successful in the 3-4 scheme.

I love Wilfork, my vote is to throw as much money at him as needed to get him here. Otherwise, I just dont see a pure NT on this team aside from Fergie.

Perhaps if Pasqualoni played more zone coverages helping our rookie CB with safety help over the top, blitzed less, and took advantage of our DL talent vs a scheme that relies heavily on LB's and NT, both weak areas on this team, he'd still be around.

Pittsburgh is a 3-4 team
New England plays a ton of 3-4

People and the NFL go in fads. I wish some of you guys could've watched the 3-4 in action under Olividotti.....Your ****ing heads would be exploding.

The 4-3 IMO is the superior set.

It all depends on who's running it, etc.

I love the 3/4 man....we just need some defense in the draft and maybe a huge free agent pick up....that's what all of finnation wants! That's what I want!

Pittsburgh and Baltimore run the 3-4, it's fine. Can we sign Rex Ryan at NT?

Colts and Saints are in the SB this year because of their great offenses and elite QB's, not their 4-3 defensive scheme, sure it's good but complimentary in both cases.

Now that Mike Nolan is our new DC, we can expect even more blitzing, due to better work with our DL and ILB's I'd think.

And again, Big Tuna will never spend a ton of money in any player, no matter if it's an elite one. Sure I'd be happy if we could land Wilfork but it's highly unlikely, given this draft is gonna be deep at the NT position and this regime will keep building through the draft.

A frustrating problem with the 3-4 is that it places a disproportionate amount of dependence on the NT, and good ones are more in demand. It's true the Jest did okay when Jenkins went down, but the injury to Ferguson, who was effective but not at the top of his game when he went down keeps me wondering "what if." The NT is just not an interchangeable part and seasons can be made and lost based on the IR roster.

This draft is NOT deep in NT. The Fins will have to overspend to get one of the better DL.
FA is a better way to immediate talent infusion for this lackluster roster on D.

Wilfork is a game changer for our D. No rookie can come close to impacting the fins D like Wilfork will.

Instead of spending big bucks for a premadonna WR, I would invest it in a young, experienced, dominating NT.

You must know something everyone else doesn't. This is the most NT rich draft in as long as I can remember.

There has been a lot of talk on the Boston sports radio about how the 3-4 is really becoming and obsolete formation, they are saying this is one of the reasons the Pat's don't want to invest so much money into Wilfork as good as he is because, with the Majority of teams now playing on astro turf the game is much faster and with the league evolving into a pass happy league that you end up subbing out half of you front 7 in a 3-4 for most of the game anyway. When you play teams like the Colts, Pats, Saints, Chargers, Cardinals ect... where they are constantly running 3+ WR sets and spread formations the 3-4 really becomes useless, as you need to be in your nickle and dime packages most of the time.

A guy like a Wilfork, Shawn Rodgers, Jason Ferguson, Casey Hampton ect.... wont be on the field much in these situations.

The 3-4 historically works the best when your playing vs a team like the jets and dolphins who aren't very good passing teams and just want to play smash mouth football and run up the gut. Problem is not many teams are playing that kind of offense anymore. Even the Steelers who has been a Run first smash mouth team almost its entire existence has become more of a spread the field passing team the last two years.

in a 4-3 you still pretty much can keep your front 4 out on the field in nickle and dime situations because their roles don't vary that much, were the front 3 in a 3-4 their primary job is not to get to the quarterback its taking up 2 and 3 body's to stop the run and let the LB's make the plays. I personally like the 3-4 but I am starting to think that because of the evolution of the league going back to the 4-3 and finding a Warren Sapp type DT would make more sense, instead of spending a high draft pick or spending a lot of money on a Wilfork type player who isn't even going to be on the field half the time anyway.

I think our roster in a 4-3 would be pretty crazy....Pick up a stud DT and rotate him along with Starks and Solai at DT. Put Wake, Langford(DE/DT), and Merling at DE, *R.McClain at ILB, Taylor and Crowder at OLB...That doesn't look so bad. McDaniels (DE/DT), Anderson (ILB), and Torbor(OLB), Ayodele (ILB/OLB), and add a stud Rookie DE.

ok guys time for a curve ball yeah all those team run a 3-4 but they all have better offenses that we have that is why they have won, whether the defense carries the offense or vice versa

the 3-4 has come to prominence BECAUSE of the pass happy league.... pressuring the QB has been prioritized above stopping the run. The 4-3 is much more predictable to a peyton manning, tom brady, etc.

a more appropriate ( and more obvious ) topic would be :

Two best QBs, with sub-par rushing attacks, can't be stopped.

Imagine if either of these teams had a 3-4 defense like PIT, NE, BAL, NYJ, DAL......
