I thought I would do a top 10 list of each position to see how Miami stacks up against the Playoff teams this year. The four to make the list are: #10 TE Charles Clay, #6 C Mike Pouncey, #7 Pass Rusher Cam Wake, and #8 CB Brent Grimes. Starks was close. 5 out of the 12 teams to make the playoffs this year have more players on this list. The rankings as far as 1-10 are fluid, but if you were to make a similar list they would have ~70% of the same names, just in a slightly different order. My conclusion is that although we do have some Pro Bowl caliber players, we don't have nearly enough to be a contender. Also we don't have as many good-solid starters as a playoff team should. See: running back, wide receiver, offensive tackle, guard, linebackers, corner, safety. With those being our biggest needs, we need to go into the draft with at least two new starting offensive lineman in Free Agency. That would allow us to take the top player on the board, who also fills one of the aforementioned needs. I will list the top 10 position rankings below, and then the playoff teams players, and how many they have.

*I did not use PFF for these rankings*

I agree with most players selected, but not necessarily the order they are in. It does show that star power at key positions is crucial, and that Miami has a lot of average stop-gap players. While we need to have some average Joe's because of NFL parity, we need to add more stars in the mix.

:chuckle:

i would argue about some of that order but it's well done...per usual

Yeah the order is definitely interchangeable. They are by no mean set in stone. What's more important is who is one the list rather than where they are.

Foles had such an extraordinary year that I think he belongs, late in the list. I don't like Alex Smith and his lifetime 6.6 YPA anywhere near the Top 10. Heck, he was 6.5 this season.

Otherwise not much to nitpick. You'll generally get high number of responses in a thread like this only if there are a high number of blatant mistakes.

In my early years on this site I posted math-based threads but not many people replied so I gave up. Same on political sites. The numbers were either intimidating or nobody had much background to respond so they plummeted quickly. I'm impressed that Gravity receives so many replies, even if most of it is combative.

I don't think you give Jamaal Charles and Ben Roethlisberger enough credit.

But appreciate the work you put into it.

The whole point is we have as many "star" or pro bowl caliber players as about half the playoff teams. It would be nice to add 1-2 more this off-season, but if we can just fill RB, OL, LB, and a S and CB with decent-pretty good starters we would likely be a playoff team. Our 2nd tier starters or bridge starters don't really match up with Denver, New England, Kansas City, or Cincinnati. We just need to add players the caliber of like Anthony Collins, Zane Beadles, Knowshon Moreno, Daryl Smith etc. type players to make our needs go from bad to pretty solid. We need better bridge starters, and the good news is we could add quite a few with 38 million in cap space. Just make sure the #1 pick is a player with "star" potential.. Darqueze Dennard, CJ Mosley, Eric Ebron etc.

I really think we should target Daryl Smith because he won't be that expensive and his background with the new LB coach.

I really like the guys you've mentioned as FA targets. I'd add Asamoah to the list. Daryl Smith would be great because he's a solid run defender, which we sorely lack. I like Dennard, but I'm not investing a 1st rounder in a corner this year. I agree going BPA with our 1st is a good route, as long as we do a decent amount of fixing of the OL through FA. If we do that, we can wait on OL till our next pick.

How many of those Ol were picked after first round?
