This year's draft looks like it's going to be loaded with good OTs. The Dolphins have a glaring need at either right tackle or left tackle, depending on where Carey plays this upcoming season. Let me say this first: this is not a bash Jake Long thread and a go Chris Long/Vernon Gholston thread. But, I do believe with the depth at OT in this year's draft, we can afford passing on Jake Long because there is a chance that one of the bettter tackles can fall to #32. The consensus top 4 OTs in this draft are Jake Long, Ryan Clady, Jeff Otah, and Chris Williams. The last time that 4 OTs went in the 1st round was in 2002 when Mike Williams, Bryant McKinnie, Levi Jones, and Marc Colombo all went in the 1st round. The last time it happened before that was in 1999 with John Tait, Matt Stinchcomb, L.J. Shelton, and AJ Gibson. Seeing as how it hasn't happened in the passed 5 years, there is a chance that either Jeff Otah or Chris Williams fall to the #32 pick for us. Both of these players are capable of playing right or left tackle and we won't have too much money tied into one position, especially if we want to extend Carey's contract beyond this year. I'm not saying that Williams or Otah WILL fall to the 2nd round, but there is a chance and the passed the drafts will show us that. So, in my opinion, we should use our 1st overall to find an elite pass rusher (Long or Gholston) and use our 2nd pick to address the offensive line.

I agree mainly because I feel we potentially have a very good LT in Vernon Carey, thus, I believe we only really need to fill the RT position, which can be done in RD2.

Otah almost certainly won't fall. Williams might though, but I wouldn't count on it. It seems that many teams have need on the o-line, combine that with the quality of o-linemen in this draft and this could be an atypical year with several more than 4 o-linemen going in round 1.

Only one OLB has been taken in the top 5 over the last 10 drafts.

Over the last decade, only AJ Hawk was picked in the top 5 as a OLB.. He was the 5th selection a couple of years ago by the Packers.

On the other hand, 6 OT's have been taken in the top 5 over that same timeframe. It sure looks like there is a much higher premium put on tackles.. And in this draft, there is a HUGE dropoff from #1 to #32. At the 32 spot you will have projects like Sam Baker who is puny and frail,, he looked like a little schoolboy when he took a photo next to jake Long and Clady.. Clady, Otah, Cherilus and Williams will be picked before 32 most likely..Alot of teams need tackles and they will be picked. I just do not see another Tony Ugoh in the 2nd round like last year.

The dolphins are best served by picking Jake Long at #1.. Period.

I agree with everything you wrote.

Lets just all pray that the Bryant Mckinney for JT trade will happen and then we can select a Guard in the 3rd round and take a DE/LB with the first . If not I think we take Jake Long

See I just don't understand that kind of thinking.

Now before I go on, this should not be viewed as a commentary on you, just this thought process I have seen around.

So you are going to trade a DE/OLB that has been a team leader, pro bowler, and Defensive Play of the Year in 2006 and replace him with an unproven rookie (who although should be pretty good in his own right). Then you take a T that has been in the league and has not been elite. So basically what you have done is to trade a DE/OLB for a T and drafted a DE/OLB. Am I the only one here who thinks this is a bit asinine?

I guess it comes down to which you prefer . . . .

Taylor and Jake

or

Chris and McKinney

Personally, I will take the former.
