The San Francisco 49ers ended negotiations with the city about building a new stadium and plan to move to either Santa Clara or somewhere else in California, according to reports Wednesday night.Owner John York notified Mayor Gavin Newsom of the team's decision earlier Wednesday, the mayor's spokesman, Peter Ragone, told The Associated Press.
"We're disappointed, but we're not planning on mortgaging the future for a deal," Ragone told the San Francisco Chronicle, which also reported the story.
Reached by the Chronicle late Wednesday, York was evasive when asked if the team was leaving the city.
"I don't know where you heard that," he said. Asked by the newspaper if the reports were incorrect, York replied, "I didn't say that."
The owner told the Chronicle he would elaborate Thursday on his team's future plans.
Would be odd to have the Niners in a different city. But I guess we'll know more tomorrow. Wonder if they'd just move to LA, knock out two birds with one stone. But I saw Santa Clara mentioned. If Santa Clara gets a team before the LA area I'll be annoyed.
