The San Francisco 49ers ended negotiations with the city about building a new stadium and plan to move to either Santa Clara or somewhere else in California, according to reports Wednesday night.Owner John York notified Mayor Gavin Newsom of the team's decision earlier Wednesday, the mayor's spokesman, Peter Ragone, told The Associated Press.
"We're disappointed, but we're not planning on mortgaging the future for a deal," Ragone told the San Francisco Chronicle, which also reported the story.
Reached by the Chronicle late Wednesday, York was evasive when asked if the team was leaving the city.
"I don't know where you heard that," he said. Asked by the newspaper if the reports were incorrect, York replied, "I didn't say that."
The owner told the Chronicle he would elaborate Thursday on his team's future plans.

Would be odd to have the Niners in a different city. But I guess we'll know more tomorrow. Wonder if they'd just move to LA, knock out two birds with one stone. But I saw Santa Clara mentioned. If Santa Clara gets a team before the LA area I'll be annoyed.

I hope SOME team just bites the bullet and packs up to LA so I don't have to worry about some BS expansion. 49ers seem to be in a position to do that, the league should step in and nudge them in that direction.

Well Santa clara is like an hour drive from san fransisco. Theres already a huge fanbase here. It would make more sense going there than L.A. Especially cuz of the tradition in the bay area.

Heres what i think should happen...they could move to santa clara, but keep the san francisco name. San Francisco 49ers of Santa Clara. Like teh Angels do it.

But theres really nothign wrong with Candlestick park...they want New facilities, more seats? WTF they can just remodle the current facilities. its not like they're selling out every game now.

The LA 49ers has a nice ring to it. :D

The team's own press release says that they would look exclusively in the Bay Area if the Santa Clara deal doesn't work out. I know that San Jose is in San Francisco's local territory in baseball, but I'm not sure how the NFL determines its boundaries.
