The San Francisco 49ers forfeited their fifth-round pick in next month's NFL draft on Monday after commissioner Roger Goodell deemed them guilty of tampering with Chicago linebacker Lance Briggs. San Francisco 49ers

Goodell also determined the teams will switch picks in the third round of the April 26-27 draft. Chicago, which had the 12th pick, will get San Francisco's seventh pick and the 49ers will get Chicago's choice.
Goodell determined the 49ers violated the NFL's anti-tampering policy by contacting Briggs' agent, Drew Rosenhaus, about his client during the 2007 season.

Doubt it. They ddn't plan on bringing Smiley back. The Bears never wanted to lose Briggs so i can understand where they're coming from. Kind of suprised by the result though. This is one of those rules that almost every team breaks.

I know many dont think of a 5th rounder is worth much, but losing a draft pick for simply talking to an agent is a very stiff penalty. I guess its a good thing for the game. Though I think its more about "appearing" to be doing something to combat "cheating" after the patriots fall out.

Maybe things will actually change under the new Commish.

Finally I agree with the commish on something- seems like everything he has done so far was completely pointless to me up until now.

They swap 3rd rounders, not 1st rounder. The 49ers don't have property of their first round pick so the commissioner couldn't force them to swap it anyways.
