49ers' offer to Crabtree worth $20 million

The deal that San Francisco 49ers' first-round pick Michael Crabtree(notes) keeps refusing is apparently worth $20 million over five years, according to the Santa Rosa Press Democrat, with $16 million of that guaranteed. With incentives, it can apparently grow to be as high as $26.5 million. Not bad for a kid just out of college in the middle of a recession, right?

Even though Crabtree appears ready to just sit out the season and re-enter next summer's draft in order to get more cash, the 49ers apparently haven't upped the offer since it was first made in June. Crabtree, who was picked tenth overall in the draft this summer, supposedly wants more money than seventh-overall pick receiver Darrius Heyward-Bay got from the Oakland Raiders. But the Niners reportedly don't want to give him anything more than ninth-overall pick defensive lineman B.J. Raji(notes) got from the Green Bay Packers.

It remains highly doubtful that a deal will get signed before the first official game of the season.

All the more reason I say there should be a rookie salary cap. Who do these kids think they are? Unproven, untested, un-everything and they DEMAND more money than they are offered?

They should feel fotunate they were blessed with the skills the have and selected to play a game that most only dream about.

I say rookies should be paid no more than 50% more than the league minimum with the option to renegotiate their contract for the second season based on their rookie season performance.

Only in professional sports can a college graduate become an instant multi-millionaire when all other college graduates are lucky if they can start their careers making a six figure salary.

These prima donas need to be humbled if you ask me.

I hope the 49ers stick with their hard line and don't budge. This guy thinks he is bigger than the game but he isn't, and a year off isn't going to improve his standing in today's NFL.

The NFL has a rookie salary system in place and while its horribly inefficient (as evidenced by this), essentially where you were drafted defines your contract value. Crabtree thinks he is better than the tenth overall pick and he may be right in some ways, but the fact of the matter is that nine teams didn't draft him and didn't think he was better than the players they drafted in those spots. So sorry, but you're gonna have to accept that you were the tenth overall pick and move on, because next year you will probably be much lower as teams won't want to spend a top ten pick or even 25 million dollars on a guy like you.

Looking for top 5 money and I really do hope the 49ers do not move from that offer. He will eventually realise that sitting out the season is not a good option and should take an offer that reflects the position where he was drafted.

i don't know if williams deserved what happened to him...... he didn't challenge the rule, clarett did. he just took advantage of an opportunity that was presented, and when the court decision was overruled he got caught up in limbo. but yeah, crabtree is a moron....

I dont agree with Crabtree holding out but its not like he is the first player to hold out. If Crabtree is a moron than all the players preceding him were morons. Also I think the NFl rule is BS on when a player can come out so I hardly look at these guys as morons for this one act. Now some have them have proved to be morons . I don't think anyone wanted what happened to Williams because it was unfortunate. But you can bet nobody will feel bad for Crabtree after he wastes a year of a young body refusing to play football for twenty million.

Is the slim possibility of finding a team dumb enough to commit more money to him next year really worth wasting an entire year?

I've got no sympathy for Crabtree. Apparently he turned off Cleveland with his attitude when visiting and indirectly that's why the Jest got Sanchez. Al Davis is a senile doddering old fool who should be removed from active management, but the fact remains that Heywood Bay got drafted 7 and that's the way the game is played. If Crabtree was worth that money he would have been drafted before then.

I don't wish the kid ill; it seems like his advisors, especially his cousin are unqualified morons.. but admit I'd LMAO next season if the "prima donna" label attaches to him and he ends up getting drafted in the mid teens.

Who's the moron, the one who gives bad advice or the one who puts it into practice?

There have been plenty of professional athletes who had bad agents/advisers telling them to hold out for money or other things. Eventually the player has to say enough is enough. The agent is always going to want the most money possible and most of the time the player isn't his only client. To him, the client is really just another business asset that he wants to get the most value for. The player, on the other hand, could suffer consequences not related to the value of their contract at all if they don't get something done. Also, when you're making 0 money not playing football, it hurts you a lot more than your agent who has money coming in from his other sources.

I think the NFL rookie system is fine. Teams do not have to pay these guys kings ransoms. Don't want to pick where you are? Trade down. Offer a fair deal to the player, slotted properly and if he doesn't take it? Screw him. Let him sit. I garuntee that Crabtree will take a big hit in the wallet if he sits out.

What team is going to take the risk of drafting him in the first round now? I wouldn't. No way.
