A year ago no one would have anticipated Laremy Tunsil falling to Miami at pick #13. Could another player unexpectedly fall in what's a loaded draft? Could the Dolphins be targeting some players we, as fans, haven't considered? Here are five players who I think are dark horse picks at #22.
Dalvin Cook, RB, Florida State
With the emergence of Jay Ajayi and the drafting of Kenyan Drake, the Dolphins are set at running back. But, Cook could be special in Adam Gase's offense. Then again, Cook could be special in any NFL offense. Would Miami go running back in round 1. I wouldn't think so, but you never know.
Cam Robinson, OT, Alabama
If the season started today, Miami would be in trouble at the guard position. That Miami didn't overpay guards on the free agent market is okay if the team has a plan moving forward. That plan has to be the draft. Personally, I don't see the Dolphins going offensive line in the first, but Robinson could be tempting. I think he would make a good left guard.
David Njoku, TE, Miami
The Dolphins are set-up short-term at tight end, but you know Gase would love to have one of the top guys from this loaded class. More likely the team looks at tight end late in the draft, but let's not forget that Gase still needs talent on the offensive side.
Jordan Willis, DE, Kansas State
After blowing up the combine, I'm surprised to see Willis still mocked in the second round. I actually don't think this would be a big surprise as Willis seems perfectly suited to Miami's wide 9.
Obi Melifonwu, S, Connecticut
Safety is a big need and Peppers would have to be a high consideration at #22. If Peppers is gone, would Miami go Melifonwu? He is projected near the bottom of the first or early second, but he would seem to check off all the boxes the Dolphins would like in the secondary. He is a 6-4 playmaker with some corner experience as well.
