5-Jabrill Peppers – S – Michigan
it’s a gamble because he simply isn’t elite at any one position. But more importantly his best position might be nickel corner and those are a lot easier to find in later rounds than wasting a 1st round pick on one.
4-Fabian Moreau – CB – UCLA
Moreau is a solid cornerback with a really nasty injury history. In 2015 Moreau suffered a Lisfranc fracture in his foot. He returned in 2016 until he suffered a shoulder injury but this 2nd round projection should be off the Dolphins radar.
The Dolphins can’t afford to take more risks with players and a Lisfranc injuy is one that can reappear at any time over his career and yes, if severe enough, it can threaten that career.
3-Jake Butt – TE – Michigan
Tight-end is a luxury pick this year for the Dolphins and it doesn’t matter what round that tight-end might appear in. The Dolphins should consider every other position of need including guard in round three because remember, they do not have a 4th until, and I have to say it, they trade two of their 5ths to move back into round 5.
2-Pat Elflein – G – Ohio State
The Dolphins simply have too many other needs specifically on defense that need to be addressed first in round one. Guard is not a luxury pick, it is a need but there is only one guard projected in the mid-20’s of round one that warrant the selection and that is Lamp.
1-Taco Charlton – DE – Michigan
Michigan players are getting a lot of mentions this year especially after owner Stephen Ross thumped his fist half-joking and said he would push for Michigan players but wouldn’t really hold anyone to drafting them
but as Wharton points out in his 2017 Draft Guide, “there is a real chance he’s never a quality starter in the NFL”. Which means Charlton is best suited to a rotational and situational role and that is not someone you draft with pick 22.
