First and foremost, the front office must determine who is worthy of being a part of the team’s foreseeable future. This could be a player that is already in Miami, a draft prospect, or a potential free agent signing. Making these choices will be critical in ensuring that at the onset of Adam Gase’s head coaching journey, there are as few hindrances in the rebuilding process as possible.

1-Assume Dion Jordan Will Ever Play Again, or Be Effective If He Does
Uncertainty and questions surround the defensive end position in Miami, as Cameron Wake isn’t getting any younger and Olivier Vernon is not sure to return next season. The only certainty is that Dion Jordan isn’t part of the answer.

2-Miss on Early Draft Picks
For the 3rd time in 5 yrs Miami will be picking in the top 10 of NFL draft, Tannenbaum & Company must avoid another draft disaster. The team is still paying for the mistakes of 2013.

3-Fail to Address Needs at Linebacker, Cornerback and Offensive Line
The team must inject as much talent and depth into these three positions as possible this offseason. Nuff said !

4-Let Derrick Shelby and Lamar Miller walk
Miami has to do their absolute best to retain defensive end Derrick Shelby and running back Lamar Miller. Both offer flexibility and would seemingly be good fits for the defense that defensive coordinator Vance Joseph is attempting to install, and for the offensive philosophies that Gase is trying to instill respectively.

5-Overpay Olivier Vernon, Rishard Matthews or Danny Trevathan
Based on the situations discussed above, overpaying to keep Olivier Vernon or to obtain Denver Broncos’ linebacker Danny Trevathan would simply be a terrible decision. Getting into a bidding war for Rishard Matthews would be similarly misguided. While each would be an improvement at their respective positions, none of them would make sense financially. Not even for Miller. The key word here is "not overpaying". The past three years, Miami have overpaid for FAs that didn't pan out.

This offseason is absolutely critical for Miami.Fans are becoming tired of hearing the hype and being sold on hope, only to be disappointed by the product on the field.

Mistakes like “Miss on early draft picks” and “Fail to address positional needs” can sound general, but that’s because they are the goals of every franchise each offseason. While some teams have more leeway, the Dolphins simply don’t. They are a rebuilding team that has been underperforming for far too long, and making potentially avoidable mistakes will simply slow down the process even further. If the offseason goes as planned, I think most fans will be satisfied with what they see from their team next season.

Even though I agree that assuming Jordan will play again or be effective would be a mistake, I also believe thinking Dion has no chance at ever being effective or or playing again, would be just as big or bigger mistake.

There have been countless very talented players that did not have thier head on straight, but once they did, became dominant players.

For the most part, I believe that Miami have hit on most of their draft pick. I will admit though, that the 2013 draft was a huge disaster, and we can not repeat that. Coaching is where we will succeed or fail.

This I agree with 100%, no matter what the plan may be, this off-season does need to end with not just Miami getting talent at those three positions, but actually striking gold with who they get to fill those three positions.

4-Let Derrick Shelby and Lamar Miller walk

Both offer flexibility and would seemingly be good fits for the defense that defensive coordinator Vance Joseph is attempting to install, and for the offensive philosophies that Gase is trying to instill respectively.

Miami does need to bring Shelby and Miller back, but if their expectation on what they should be paid, gets too insane, there might be little Miami can do. Miami really can't afford to get into a bidding war, let alone two of them.

I agree, Miami needs to be smart, as much as I wish we could bring back all of the talented players from last year, and add even more talent to fix the holes, there is a salary cap, and decisions will have to be made on what players are worth, and where the cutoff is.

We have already made the decision that we cannot fail on again... COACHING...

I really don't want to see the team overspend this off-season I don't think we need any more high priced Free Agents. We should focus on depth and youth. Get the high end talent cheaply from the draft and fill in with capable depth... Doesn't sound hard unless you work for the Fins FO.

No we have not LOL. Can you name an ELITE player drafted in the last 5 years? We have gotten good players but none are top 5-20 at their position except Pouncey, Miller, and OV. Compare that to

Bills since 2011:Sammy Watkins, Seantrel Henderson, Kiko Alonso, Ronald Darby, Stephon Gilmore, Cordy Glenn, Marcel Dareus
Vikings since 2011: Eric Kendricks, Anthony Barr, Teddy Bridgewater, Shariff Floyd, Xavier Rhodes, Matt Kalil, Harrison Smith, Kyle Rudolph
Cardinals since 2011: Deone Bucannon, John Brown, Tyrann Mathieu, Michael Floyd, Patrick Peterson
Bengals since 2011: Jeremy Hill, Tyler Eifert, Giovanni Bernard, Kevin Zeitler, Mohamed Sanu, Marvin Jones, George Iloka, Clint Boling, AJ Green
Chiefs since 2011: Marcus Peters, DAT, Travis Kelce, Dontari Poe, Rodney Hudson, Von Miller

All very valid points. Thanks for posting fisi. All these points are things anyone with common sense could come up with though... I'd love to be a beat write for us.

Hindsight is rough for anyone, but man you make it look bad.

Here's one that stings- 2013 draft. Good players all over the place that we could have taken but Ireland f***ed that one up bad.

I agree especially with overpaying Vernon. I think with Wake coming back healthy and Shelby continuing to grow we should be fine

I do not agree with your opinion on what makes a successful draft.

The Chiefs drafted Von Miller....? :err:

I wish we never signed Suh. I also had wished we never signed Mike Wallace. I never wanted either and hoped for the best when we got them. None of these dudes getting paid 4-5-6mil more than the next highest paid player make sense. If Suh is elite getting $19mil and other elite DT's are getting paid $8-12mil/year don't you think there is something wrong with that? We're always stupid in FA, that's our biggest problem, and why our depth always sucks.

It's definitely time to get it right.

As to Dion Jordan, I think the front office views him as just another guy at this point. It's a bonus if he comes in and produces. Then again, the team could just cut him, which is a big possibility.

Missing on draft picks has killed this team so that goes without saying not only for the Dolphins, but for ever teams long-term success.

I would make signing Olivier Vernon the free agent priority this offseason. You simply can't have enough pass rushers in today's NFL and Vernon is just 25 years old. He played well in the second half for Miami and really stepped up when Cam Wake was injured.

That said, Vernon would probably be my only big time free agent signing. Miami needs to be careful here and I agree with that point. I love Lamar Miller and it would be exciting to see what he could do with 20 carries a game, but the Dolphins can find a bargain running back if need be.

It's really all about building through the draft and bringing in depth through free agency, maybe finding a couple of decent starters.

I never said what a successful draft was :ponder:

A successful draft in my opinion is very good/elite player and 2-3 picks that contribute within their first few years. The Raiders for instance have had successful drafts in consecutive years.
2014: Derek Carr, Gabe Jakcson, Khalil Mack, Travis Carrie
2015: Amari Cooper, Clive Walford, Ben Heeney, Mario Edwards, Jonathan Feliciano

Compare that what we have done
2014: James and Landry
2015: Parker, Ajayi, Phillips
