I know this is premature and we have a lot to be excited about, but I wanted to see how you guys feel about this. With all the talk about Free Agency next year and how we'll be 25M under the cap, what would you want to do if we could go shopping? Lets say that we go after 3 Free Agents. What positions would you want to shore up? What would you want to draft with your first three picks?

I realize that he may go with Best Player Available, but what would you consider priorities?

Draft
----------
1st Round: Quarterback - We'll have him learn the offense for a year unless Gus isn't effective. This could go either QB or CB

2nd Round: Defensive Line - Unless Vickerson and Wright develop, we need to get a monster in the middle like Traylor. He fits this defense really well.

3rd Round: Linebacker - I think we'll have Crowder for the future, but we'll need a big guy to step in here. I think we'll look for someone in the 6'3'' - 6'4'' range and about 245.

Free Agency
------------
Center
OLB
CB
Tackle or Guard Based on this year's performance

I think we might have a good oline that the'll look to bulk for depth, but we likely need a new center to anchor this line with strength and consistency. Obviously we'll look for a QB somewhere -- isn't it crazy how we all have to just cross our fingers and darn near PRAY that whoever we get here ends up helping build a dynasty?:D

I can't believe all the good Saban has done thus far. It makes me want to go work for the Dolphins in some capacity!:D

Free agency could be very interesting this coming offseason if a guy like Julian Peterson becomes available as some have already mentioned.

isnt he already injured this season...and what about resigning our own free agents, like mcmike

I was thinking about Julian Peterson too. But he'll really have to prove he can stay healthy if we pay him big time $$. I know people have talked about it, but what are the biggest FA's that we know about now?

Draft:

1st round; LT, it's a big year for offensive lineman next year and Saban will pick one no matter where we pick in the first round. My pick: Andrew Whitworth, LT LSU.

2nd round; QB, I would say we should get a QB in the first but there is nobiody worthy of a first round pick that we will have a chance at. We definately need a Qb though and Saban will be looking for somebody to groom into a starter for years to come. My Pick: Reggie McNeal, QB Texas A&M, He has the mobility that I have seen Saban to like and he is a very good passer.

3rd round; C, I think C is definately a position of need and depending on the prospects at this pick(who is the best player available), we should be looking to improve here. My pick; Greg Eslinger, C Minnesota. I would not be the least bit Surprised if he were takin higher than the 3rd round given the production that Minnesota's running game has had this year. I think he would be a huge steal at this point and if we had a shot at him we should take him. He would be an upgrade over both Mckinney and Hadnot.

Free Agents to look for.

Depending on what kind of money he wants I think Drew Brees is a very logical choice here. He is still very young, the Chargers WILL NOT keep him next year for they have to much money invested in Rivers, and it would be a much faster process for him to come in and learn and guide our offense the would a rookie.

Another intruiging player is Julian Peterson. He will be a free agent this next year, and he played for Saban at Michigan State. We will more than likely need a OLB, because I see Junior retiring this offseason and Crowder will be a MLB in a 3-4 scheme and will be molded into Zach's replacement.

we will try and grab a corner in the draft, I don't think we will draft DL because of Vickerson and Wright that we drafted last year. Unless there is a big steal when we draft I think Saban will wait and see how these two progress and see if they can start in the NFL.

These are all just a few thoughts I had after reading this thread.

i think we make playoffs at ten and six as a wild card.

we are too low to get a stud like leinart, vick or young.

i say we trade that low 1st round pick and a future 3rd round pick to the chargers for rivers cause no way they give up on brees now.

and also no way in hell rivers stays on teh bench. he has said many times that he expects to be starting somewhere next year and also no way in hell that brees wants another 1 year deal. brees expects a long term deal from some team after this year.

No way they keep Rivers and Brees. Rivers wants to start. Period.

way too early.... but I do love Draft talk

Unless Hadnot can be an good center, I think we desparetly need a center. I think we need someone who can do the job NOW!!!! Hopefully LeCharles Bentley will be avaliable. I think some other team needs that need to be addressed next year are:
QB
LT
C
LB
CB
Maybe Safety

Nick Mangold (OSU) could be an option at center. As of now I am not sure what round he will go. He just dropped off Kipers "Big board".

Draft (assuming we pick in the 20s):
1st - CB Jason Allen, Tennessee: Poole won't be a 100% when he returns so it'll give him a year to take it easy & be Madison's swan song (if Allen is gone then DB Michael Huff of Texas: has experience at CB, currently plays SS, covers like a corner but better suited for FS)
2nd - LT Andrew Whitworth, LSU: McIntosh has played well thus far but we need a young cornerstone
3rd - C Nick Mangold, Ohio State: I'd love to get Eslinger but he'll be long gone, maybe in the late first
4th - DT Kyle Williams, LSU: one of Saban's boys, another man in the trench to take over for Zgonina
5th - DT Manual Wright, USC: I think I'll get this one right

Free Agency/Trade:
QB - Drew Brees
OLB - Julian Peterson

Ya right.

Hey Drew, even though you are a good quarterback who has contributed to one of the few winning seasons the Chargers organization has had in decades for successive years, and even though we have had QB problems forever, and even though you have won comeback player of the year and have won the hearts of San Diego fans and players, and are LTs best friend... we are going to trade you and put all of our faith in a QB who has never played in an NFL game before instead of trading him for a high draft pick...that sound about right?

All that considered it puts San Diego in a huge bind. They have a lot of money invested in Rivers & nothing invested in Brees. It'll be a double whammy if they decide to trade Rivers because they'll take a huge cap hit from that & then they'd have to sign Brees to a big contract. If money wasn't involved then no doubt they should trade the overrated, soon to be proven bust, Philip Rivers.
