5 QUESTIONS FOR DAN MARINO

August 5, 2005 -- This week, NYP TV Sports' Andrew Marchand spoke with CBS' and HBO's Dan Marino. The 43-year-old former Dolphin quarterback will be inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame on Sunday.
Q: How emotional will Sunday be for you?

A: I have nothing to compare it to, but I do know that it is going to be a great day for my family, friends and teammates. You think about all the people who are involved in your football life and your personal life and have had an effect on your career, I'm sure it will be very emotional.

Q: Have you ever seriously thought about if the Jets had chosen you instead of Kenny O'Brien? Jets fans have.

A: I know. I know. They should get over it. To be honest with you, I haven't put a lot of thought into that. I would like to think that I was the kind of player that I could have helped the Jets be successful and we would have won a championship. I didn't win one in Miami, but who knows? I don't really think about that a lot.

Q: Which moment against the Jets is the most memorable for you?

A: We played a playoff game once, but probably the spike game because everyone makes such a big deal out of it. We came back, four touchdown passes in the second half, all to the same guy [Mark Ingram.] In the fashion, it all came about. The fake spike.

Q: Whose idea was the spike play?

A: Bernie Kosar [who was Marino's backup] brought that play from Cleveland. We practiced it most of the year and at camp, but it never really comes up. If it does, you want to take advantage of it. I thought it was a great idea. It was the perfect time against the Jets.

Q: What is the one thing about Dan Marino that people don't realize?

A: I think - not only for myself - but quarterbacks and professional athletes in general, they see them perform on Sunday and I don't think sometimes people appreciate all the hard work that goes into their profession and things that they have worked to get to that point. I think sometimes people take that for granted.

If you look at a guy like Peyton Manning or Michael Vick, who play so great on Sunday afternoons, I don't think people appreciate how hard they work to get to that point.

By the way, the Jets never played Miami in the playoffs when Dan was there, the game he must be thinking of is the '91 season finale when the winner went to the playoffs.
