Well, another year and anothe rmoment where Dolphin's management makes their fans go ...huh? Right or wrong, the first days picks are in and we now have four new members to the Miami Dolphins team! So, let be be the first (or 5,000th) to welcome Ted Ginn Jr., John Beck, Samson Satele, and Lorenzo Booker to the team.

Now, throughout the draft process I love to look for trends. Any and all kinds of trends. In addition, I love to find out new things, like what goes into a pick, the cat and mouse game of trading up or down, etc. So, with time to reflect on today's events, I present to you:

Samphin's 5 things he thinks he learned:

5. Dol-fans don't care about Ted Ginn's family.
So, you are Cam Cameron and you just shocked the football world with your first overall pick of your regime. Brady Quinn is sitting there, but you give him a deke and pick the speedster, Ted Ginn Jr. You go in front of your loyal fan base who bought tickets to watch tv, essentially, and get torn a new arsehole.

I haven't heard that loud of booing since the Wannstedt era? And how does Cameron defend the pick? He talks about how great the guy will do on special teams...really? We used our first pick on a special teamer? Who is this guy, Eddie Moore? Judging by the weight on him, he would go down just as easily.

Cameron tried to back pedal even more by saying we got Ginn's family in the deal too. Yay? Can Teddy's dad play LT? Can Gramma play bump and run? Because unless his family plays as well, I don't care about his family. I care about what Ted Ginn can do for Miami, and right now, according to Cameron, he can run back kicks.

Geez, that must have felt horrible for Cameron. His first ever pick, and whether you like it or hate it, he does a terrible job of defending it and gets shallacked for it by just about everyone. Mueller, is no innocent bystander either, but he at least had the smarts to lay low. Cameron, welcome to the NFL and the team with the most fickle fanbase brother! Hopefully we don't scare you off like that last poser we got in here.

4: Samson Satele better never cut his hair

First off, hoe cool is it to have a football player named Samson? Arguably our best pick of day one came with our second pick in the seocnd round. Samson Satele figures to be the anchor of our offensive line for many years at the center position. However, only if he keeps his flowing locks. I know my mythologies and the last guy named Samson was a stud until he cut off his hair. Satele better not make the same mistake.

3: Wayne Huizenga and Co. LOVE Warrick Dunn

It is too bad they were never able to draft/sign him. Maybe then we could have avoided drafting not one, but two of his midgety scatback clones from Florida State. One of the best moves for me to see was the jettisoning of a certain underachieving Travis Minor during the offseason. However, once the last pick of the first day rang out, I too, rang out...a very audible "Fothermucker!"

Its not that I really hate Lorenzo Booker, but lets just say I would have loved to have seen Buffalo/New York/New England draft him so that Joey Porter or whomever could have stomped him into the ground. Furthermore, his last name is Booker, which means if we keep Marty, that their jerseys will have that stupid M. Booker/L. Booker thing. I hate that. That is why I think I love Cleo Lemon so much. No one else is gonna rock the Lemony last name.

2: Steve Young and Steve Mariucci have man crushes on Brady Quinn

Did you guys happen to see them when Miami picked Ginn? They were more devastated than the most hardcore Quinn to Dolphins fan. I felt like putting an arm around Steve telling him it was gonna be ok. But then I remembered I don't like Steve Young. Mooch was the same way on NFL Network. Perhaps they made a side bet with Pete Rose about Brady going to Miami, I don't know.

Whatever was going on, they were certainly shocked and dismayed by Quinn not going to Miami. I haven't seen Steve Young so hurt by anything since Warren Sapp leg dropped him opening weekend several years ago. Calm down Steve...both of you.

1: John Beck makes good music.
I have been a fan of Beck's for years. I certainly loved many of his albums and feel that the song "Loser," is vastly underrated.

What? Wait we didn't draft THAT Beck? We drafted a QB from BYU who is closer to 30 than 20? Oh....swell, I guess. Can we trade him for some Beck CD's? NO? Oh ok...hmmmmm.

Truth be told, John Beck seems like a good fit for Miami. We have had a long line of mediocre to average QB's here and John should fit right in. Honestly, John seems talented, I just wish he was 2-3 years younger. Unless John is able to come in and start right away (doubtful) it almost seems like we are investing a lot in a guy who won't be ready until his social security matures.

I wish him nothing but the best of course. Really, I do.

So, that is that. The top five things I think I learned for the first day of the 2007 NFL draft. Feel free to add your own or comment on mine

Unfortunately...hard to complain with your list. Sounds like your day was a lot like mine :).

It was a lighthearted list to some degree. I certainly was shocked with us passing on Quinn, but I think I have talked myself off the ledge...for ow. When Quinn leads the hapless Browns to the Super Bowl though, I will be right up there in the rain with a plugged in toaster ready to jump into a swimming pool while wearing cement shoes.

i don't feel bad for him. If you knew you weren't taking quinn and that you wanted this guy, a guy getting paid the millions cam is can hire someone to Write something for him. he could have told me that ginn would get me laid after every game and it would have sounded better then the "i picked a guy because i owed his father some money"

Hilarious.

Still, I disagree about Beck.

Let's play "pretend" and say that Beck takes two years to "develop." At that point, he'd turn 28 during the '09 season. From there, he can easily enjoy a 8-10 year NFL career. Aren't we close to adding the 37 year old Green?

Beck's a smarter, more mature QB than Quinn. He may be (arguably) the most NFL-ready QB in this year's draft. I think he'll be our starter (at least) by '08. From there, I'll be fine seeing him play 8 or 9 years at the expense of a 2nd round pick.

It's simple. The Dolphins' brass doesn't think Quinn's going to develop into a stud. They don't feel he's worth guaranteed millions. How can I argue with that just yet? Isn't that the one thing we should trust Cam about? In time, if Brady proves otherwise ...

Well, then ..

*****s 9MM*

Haha, just kidding.

I don't even think this will happen because it is still technically the Browns. You know those teams that have all the talent in the world and yet still can't do anything (like the Skins' paying tons and getting nothing in return). I kinda feel that way about the Browns. I mean you have to get over the fact that Quinn is gone from the board and focus on our own team. He may have a good career or he could be the next Rick Mirer, no one knows yet. But I'm currently around Pittsburgh and all they are talking about right now is smashing Quinn and although I'm not a Steeler fan, I really hope they do it .

If John Beck's age ever becomes a factor, wouldn't that imply that he's had a fairly long and successful career here? Yeah, he's 25, but he's not Chris Weinke. Let's assume he is an understudy for a season or two and takes over at some point in 2008. Most QBs are effective until their mid 30s and to be a professional athlete and still starting at that age implies a good bit of ability.

Please re-read the article, the comments were made in jest somewhat. I like just about everything about Beck outside of his age. The reason I say that is because I think he can be good and I would want him even longer if possible.

Despite your confusion with John Beck and Beck Hanson, pretty sound post.

By the way, I hear momma Ginn is a monster weak-side blitzer.

Cameron didn't make himself any friends by attempting to defend his choice. He should take the attitude of "I'm the coach and your the moron fans." Never defend yourself when you don't have to.

As far as Samson Steele, I'd be happier if...the best center in the draft wasn't taken the pick BEFORE him. Kinda grinds my gears.

I think Satele was the pick all along. Houck loves versatility and Kalil has none. Satele gives us the option to play him at center or guard. I really don't think there is much diefference between the too other than the fact that Samson brings more to the table and is bigger.
