1-Branden Albert
Albert has been injured since the day he arrived. Despite his ACL/MCL tear and his hamstring issues this year, he still has a back issue that has yet to reveal it’s ugly head. It is an issue dating back to college. Albert is very good when he is on the field but the problem is keeping him on the field. The Dolphins need more reliability from the position and the offensive line as well.
Albert is slated to count just over $10 million next season. If the Dolphins release him he will carry just over $5 million in dead money and save the team about the same amount in cap relief.
2-Brent Grimes
Grimes isn’t getting any younger and so far in 2015 he is showing signs of slowing down. Grimes is still electric don’t get me wrong but the Dolphins need to get bigger at the corner position and eventually they will need to replace him entirely. That may come sooner rather than later.
Grimes is scheduled to count over $9 million in 2016 and would carry a dead space of around $3 million but the Dolphins would get $6 million back in relief. At 32 years of age this year, it’s inevitable that he will be gone in the next two seasons.
3- Reshad Jones
Jones has been a staple in the Miami secondary since he was taken in the 5th round of the 2010 draft. Jones’ is giving the Dolphins everything he has on the field and he has become a huge leader in the secondary. Jones will also count $8.2 million on the cap next year. Releasing him will save the Dolphins over $6.2 million in cap space and carry only a $1.5 cap hit.
4-Koa Misi
Misi is slated to count just under $5 million on the cap next year. His savings are only slightly north of $3 million. His contract is a very valuable one for a starting NFL linebacker but here’s the rub. Misi doesn’t play that well.
Misi is constantly out of position, takes bad pursuit angles, and is non-existent in rushing the passer. His coverage skills are far better than his run support but that really isn’t saying much because his run support is really bad. Misi has been flopped back and forth the last two seasons from outside to inside and neither have made a difference.
5-Cameron Wake
Wake is a fan favorite but he has never reached the levels of Jason Taylor or Zach Thomas. It’s hard to imagine the Dolphins releasing him but then again who would have imagined Taylor being traded to the Jets? Wake has trade value and that may be a route the Dolphins explore.
Wake is scheduled to make just under $10 million next season but his cap relief is over $8 million with about $1.5 in dead money. Wake isn’t playing anywhere near the level he used to and frankly, there are games that he sometimes doesn’t show up for at all and I have personally witnessed him walk off a field dejected. At half-time. And not recover in the 2nd half.
Can you say the R word.....Run-Rinse-Repeat and REBUILD that awful defense.
