5 wide WRs and more of the Daboll swing pass.

Can any believe that we went 5 wide WRs? TWICE? Whose offense was that? Who was in the Aqua uniforms?

I also got a better look at that swing pass that P Hillis caught so many of. The best example was on the long pass completion to the right side to Fasano.

This pass is ran from the Shotgun with the running back (this time it was D.Thomas) always on the weak side. The running back first job is to look for a blitzing FS, corner or LB. If no one blitzes then the running back runs a wide sweep route.

Last week D Thomas caught one for a little over 20 yards. Tonight he was wide open on the left side of the field and I'm thinking that Henne is going to hit him but then he sees Fasano and hits him now the right side.

I only got to see a online feed of the game so more later after I watch the replay of it.

I was watching the highlight video and it seemed that Henne had a lot of options, more than what he had last season. For some strange reason, having more options worked.

I was going to protest that the Fins ran plenty of five wide when Marino was the quarterback, but then I thought about it and realized that in fact it has been exceedingly uncommon. Mind, Shula cooked up some truly strange four wide positions (anybody else remember that slot bunch formation?)

Most QB's are at their best running 5WR and in hurry up. Eli Manning is the classic example. Do the numbers splits and its a huge difference.

Some QB's when they have the field spread just are more in a comfort zoen
 
lot of times henne was in max protection last year with only 2 or 3 targets
i like it with less blitz protection and having more options can make big plays that
way just need to buy some time sometimes or just take off running or make the quick throw..
 
I thnk the reason you're seeing Henne more mobile in preseason in the pocket is that Daboll has said to him "I'll give you more downfield options but in exchange you're going to have to hustle in the pocket more". No way Henne gets the max protect option this season. That´s the trade-off and I think it's the correct decision to maximize Chad's output.

Honestly, so much about the offensive strategy last season exacerbated Henne's weaknesses and hid his strengths. I'm neither a hater nor a lover of Henne, but for me this season is the first time we will really get to see what the guy is made of. For a start, he was totally over-protected at the LOS last year and left with too few options.

Henne did seem to have lots of options particularly DOWN-FIELD, of course watching the game on the tube its hard to tell how open guys were! But you could clearly see some separation. If we are to be truly successful and deadly in this kind of offense Henne is going to have to do two things

1) Really learn to manipulate the Safeties and

2) Make throws like Brees/Brady etc..in those seams and small openings DOWN-FIELD! Getting serious CHUNK yards!

I get the feeling he is a little gun-shy with those kinds of tough throws. Which is why as a coaching staff i would encourage him to try 1 or 2 during these preseason games. Honestly though i'm not sure if he has that kind of talent
 
The spread offense works well for Henne, it defines the throwing the lanes and makes it harder for defenses to disguise coverage. We need Reggie and Brandon to stay healthy, and IF (big if) Henne can improve his down field accuracy (missed Gates deep a couple times) this offense could put up some points. Gates is killing DB's with his speed, just need Henne to connect on a few of those deep routes, and things will open up even more for Reggie, Brandon and Davone.
 
The formations on offense are looking a lot better and a lot less predictable and vanilla (like in past years). I am hoping we can average more than the 16-18 points we have the last couple years. Last year we had tons of opportunities but seemed to settle on a lot of FG attempts by Carpenter. We have to get the ball in the end zone more. I think Reggie Bush will give us more options to run/catch it when in the red zone, and this will give our WR's/TE's more chances as well.
 
The thing I'm noticing watching the replay is that we have ran a number of pass plays where instead of our WRs being from 3 to 30 yards out when the patterns are ran, the closest WRs is 12-15 yard downfield, there is often a huge open area between the LOS and where the defensive secondary is setting up in their zone.
 
Very excited about the play calling so far. I noticed Henne going through progression a lot as well. Obviously, he has matured some over the offseason, no question. This says a lot about Henning and our offensive woes last year, in my opinion. Obviously, Henne played a part last year too, but he seem much better in this system so far.
 
Last season we had Marshall, Hartline and Bess. When we lost Hartline for a couple of games and it made a difference. Wallace and Moore just were not good enough to help.

We now have a improved Hartline and Bess and Marshall in his prime. Plus the 6'5" 225 pound R Wallace is showing up this season as a player. C Gates is already being used in all the WR positions and has shown he can get open deep on double teams. I also expect us to work P Livas into our passing game and we might see him run a little on reverses etc.

So we went from 3 WRs we could count on to make plays: Marshall, Hartline and Bess.

to 6 WRs that we can count on: Marshall, Hartline, Bess, Gates, Wallace, Livas.

Plus you have to add R Bush as a defenses nightmare.
 
why are you shocked , he spend 7 yrs in newengland as a coach and is the only one with 3 SB rings -a fact no one mentioned.
