I think it'll be Gates if anyone is challenging Hartline
I agree.
C.Gates is already pushing Hartline, who I think is a good WR with good speed.
C.Gates makes any combo dangerous:
Gates, Bess and Marshall.
Hartline, Bess and Gates.
Gates, Wallace and Marshall. etc etc.
Then you can add R Bush to any of those groupings and see how hard it gets.
We are putting Gates on the outside taking up their fastest corner. I think the Revises etc of the NFL will be covering C Gates not B Marshall.
I think of Gates as a tougher, better and in ways faster WR then Ted Ginn. Gates is much more willing to go to
get the football and he loves the game, he is not a coaches son, he is a hungry young man.
This is one reason I want others to step up for return work. We have a limited amount of practice and game reps leading up to our first game against the Patriots.
I want C Gates working 100% of the time as a WR who is going to play a lot right away.
Allow players like P Livas, K Sheets, N Grigsby etc who will not be starting to spend the time working on returns.
We now have 3 players who are very hard to cover, Marshall, Gates and Bush. If two or more of these 3 players are on the field at one time then the defense is on it's heels.
I'm not sure how many nickel backs can cover Devone Bess in the slot, that could be
4 players that are hard to cover one on one.
Add
R Bush and we now have
5 players that are nightmares to cover one on one.
Against the Panthers I saw several pass plays where we had
more then one WR/RB/TE open. A few times there were
3 guys open.
There were passes forced to Bess and Marshall and they made the plays along with Henne making the throws. That was impressive because
instead of just taking what little the defense wants to give, we took what we wanted.
H-Back C Clay caught two passes as did TE Fasano who caught the longest pass of the night for 38 yards. I think they can get open as can R Wallace who is 6'5" 225 and fast plus he plays great special teams which will help him earn the 5th WR spot.
Interesting thing about the Henne to Fasano pass completion. On the same play D Thomas was wide open on the wide swing route. I'm sure Thomas told Henne about it and Henne soon tried to force one to Thomas downfield and on the sideline that was broken up. On that play Gates was open stopped over the middle but Chad Henne was going to go for the big play. As long as he does not get picked off i like it......
Within a few weeks, Chad Henne and C Gates are going to connect on a 64 yard TD bomb and it is all going to open up and it is going to start to rain.
The questions will be can our new/old OL stand up, protect Henne as well as run block. And can Chad Henne on one hand hit the open WRs and on the other, keep the interceptions down to less then one per two TD's thrown.
We have added at least 13+ possible points per game of offensive firepower to this offense and the defense is deep and improved.
It has been many many years since the Dolphins had so full of a array of WRs. Small, medium and large, all with good speed with two with great speed. And this again is not counting R Bush is almost impossible for a linebacker or any defensive back to cover.
