So Allen wants a 5 year deal and the Phins want to lock him up for 6 years.
Apparently the guys 1-16 can sign 6 year deals and the guys drafted after #16 can only sign 5 year deals.

However....

Vernon Davis, the #6 pick got a 5 year deal with the Niners
Ngata, the #12 pick got a 5 year deal with the ravens

So if the Ravens and Niners are willing to hand out 5 year deals, what is the Dolphins' hangup? I'm putting the blame squarely on the shoulders of the Dolphins.

Give the kid a 5 year deal, smack him on the bottom, and tell him to hit somebody (except for Culpepper)!

I agree. The Fins need to realize that if we bring him into camp and he plays well for a couple of seasons he'll get his extension. If we win, most likely he'll be happy in Miami. Just get him into camp so we can have him week 1 against the Steelers.

well they agreed on the money so if they give him 6 years it will be less a year. and with 5 its more a year if im right i dont know.

The signing bonus for a 5 year contract is different than for a 6. If they want him for six, they should be prepared to give him a healthy signing bonus and probably pay him very well in the 6th year.

i think 6 yr deals are too long for rookies considering its football and a lot can happen, the dolphins should just sit back on this one and give allen the 5 year deal he wants...if we are expecting to have a strong secondary and have jason allen be a large part of it we have to get him to tc as soon as possible

yea 6 years is to long for a rookie.i agree

The dolphins are trying to do what's best for the franchise. Chill out everyone, if it goes more than another week, then start the bit**in. Its the first day of camp.

So Ohio Finatic gets to dictate when fans can complain about holdouts. I'm glad he has set the record straight.

I'll complain whenever I want to, removed

I'm advocating that the Dolphins treat the guy right. Offer the man a 5 year deal!

Yeah just seems silly holding out for an extra year if all the other parts of the deal are already agreed and waiting to be signed. Especially silly as Huizenga wanted the deal finalized before camp started.

Amen, get the deal done!!

The offer is a six year deal, he either takes it or he can hold out. If he starts a hold out remove 50,000 USD a day from the contract.

If he doesnt sign then, he can sit out the year and be a 3rd round choice (at best).

if he does 6 he gets more money so i dont understand why he wants 5. anyways i just want him to sign so give him the 5 and than give him an exstension in the future.

You're right - 5 years is good enough - come on Phins :shakeno:

Actually Vince Young, Vernon Davis, Haloti Ngata, and Michael Huff have all signed 5 year deals. Out of the top 16 that are available for six year deals 7 remain unsigned with Ferguson's numbers not known at this point. As of right now we know about 8 contracts 4 are 5 year deals and 4 are 6 year deals. Just give the man the 5 year contract and use a club option at a rediculous salary for the 6th.

This is incorrect. Young technically has a 6 year deal. Almost all the six year deals are similar - they are five years with a team option for the sixth - but the money goes up. And, if they reach certain incentives in the 1st 2-3 years, they can get opt out of the 6th year deal.

This is the kind of deal the Dolphins should go for. The reason they want it is that if a player takes a while to develop, they don't want him to be coming into his own and contributing and then they worry about losing him. But, if he plays great and moves into his spot right away, then they get production out of him for the full five years - and he gets rewarded by getting out of the deal a year earlier.

I fully understand the team's reasoning and side with them. Consider how many #1/#2 picks the team has paid out big $$$ for and the guy never develops.

Allen should go with the 6 year deal and if he really thinks he's worth 1st round money - then he'll have the confidence to reach certain incentives and be able to get it reduced to a 5 year deal.
