'72 Dolphins Vs. '78 Steelers

I always wondered if the '73 Dolphins were better than the '72 Dolphins. They lost two games, but in the playoffs they destroyed Cinncinnati, Oakland and Minnesota -- scored on the opening possession of each game. In the Super Bowl they scored on their first two possessions.

Many years ago, ESPN ran a series of virtual challenges between teams of different eras. They actually did run one of the '72 Dolphins vs. '78 Steelers (at least I believe it was the '78 Steelers; the memory gets foggy after so many years). Believe it or not, the Fins lost. Made me absolutely insane at the time. You'd have thought I was watching an actual game.

Does anybody else remember this series or have I once again retreated into my own little fantasy world? :goof:

I think the 72 Dolphins are simply better because the lost their HOF QB due to injury for a considerable part of the season and still were able to go undefeated  I bet if the 78 steelers had lost Bradshaw they wouldn`t even been in the SB.

i never even thought of that.

Perfection is ALL that matters...

17-0....Nuff said....They won all of them....
Can the Steelers say that?
Nope...

No! You are correct. And it pissed me off also.

Dolphins straight up no doubt. It does not matter who you play they are trying to beat you just as much as you are trying to beat them. If you can run the table in the regular season with a backup qb and the playoffs you should be the best team ever IMO. The only reason we dont get respect is because we aint the Cowboys, Redskins,Steelers or 49ers. If the Cowboys did it with the same players they would have been the best team ever.

There is a web site that allows you to play different teams for different era's....I wish I could remember the web site. I like to think the '72 or '73 team could beat most teams.

Yeah I remember and you are correct. The week before the 72 fins were at a 70's Oakland team, don't remember the exact year, and the 7X Raiders had the 72 Fins beat but there was a defensive penalty on the last play of the game, against Oakland, which gave the 72 Fins a second shot at the go ahead score and they got it and won the game. I thought it was cool that the game came down to the least penalized team vs the most penalized team being a factor.

Anyways their Super Bowl (or Dream Bowl as I think they called it) came down to the 78 Steelers beating the 84 49ers when Mel Blount returned a Joe Montana interception for a TD, when Montana was driving his team down the field for the winning score in the last 2 minutes of the game. I thought that was a strange ending because Montana never threw a pick in an SB.

I can't believe someone brought this show up. I was very young when it aired but i really liked it.

In the favor of the '72 Dolphins, however, their D shut out a potent Redskins' offense.

quite frankly, the 78 Cowboys got jobbed in that Super Bowl against Pittsburgh... They completely dominated third quarter and had taken over the momentum of the game... Jackie Smith drops a touchdown, Bennie Barnes receives the worst pass interference call in SB history, and Clff Harris is blocked by the ref on Franco's scoring run... Randy WHite fumbles the ensuing kickoff with a cast on his hand, Steelers go up three scores, lights out

What isn't talked about a lot, but is now a proven fact born out by time is............................The Steelers of the middle -late 70's were probably the first great team heavily influenced by steroids, many many people love to talk about how great they were, but when you look at some of the key people from their O-line for example, Mike Webster (hall of fame center) who died not that long ago, way before his time from problems caused by steroid use, or Steve Courson, same story.

I remember when I was watching this all unfold in the 70's thinking, how were these Steelers lineman so much bigger and stronger than the Dolphin dynasty I just watched a few years earlier?

Well, the early deaths of these Steeler players and their deaths being attributed to problems caused by Steroid use bring the picture into much better focus for me.

I believe that when all is said and done, the Steelers dynasty will go down as the first team with widespread steroid use.

I cannot name one player on the 71-74 Dolphins who appeared to be on, or there is evidence now of steroid use.
