Just to be a little more specific, the home teams in the playoffs were decided based on a yearly divisional rotation. The exception was the wild card team, which would always play on the road.

That was a kick in the arse,...Imagine going undefeated
today and NOT getting home field advantage.Sometimes

The fact that home field advantage was rotated, speaks volumes that Miami was able to make it to three straight super bowls. That was quite an accomplishment when you consider how strong Oakland and Pittsburgh were as well.
