73 Superbowl vs Skins

Those uniforms should be what they were today.

I watched. Holy lord the technology sucked then. The graphics and picture quality was rough. Deserves a Godfather like HD remaster.
It's amazing how much the game has changed in terms of technology. We take for granted that when a ref throws a flag there will be a camera shot showing the culprit. Not so much in the 70's. Fans had to accept without actually seeing a lot of the times. It amazes me how many cameras are in use and how not much is missed by the camera crews.

On another subject, watching games from the 70's it's also amazing how much the defense got away with or was able to do. Defensive backs had just as much right to the ball as the offensive player. Just a completely different game.

That is why I liked the game back then over today's pass happy lovefests. Even if you go back to Marino's era in the 80's, it was still a balanced game. Now the defense hardly ever gets a holding penalty when they rush the passers and the DBs are serious disadvantage.

what strikes me is that we haven't won **** in the modern era, i laugh at myself for watching you tubes of the seventies and eighties just to remember relevance

The no name defense got screwed by Garo's gaffe.

They technically are the only defense in Superbowl history to get a shutout.... Because the special teams gave up his gaffe for the Skins only touchdown.

Because of that the no names truly don't get their just due.

The next year....they only surrendered 7 Points to Fran Tarkenton in Superbowl 8....no small feat, and a great defense.

You're absolutely right. Back then, the idea was "It ain't nothing until the ref calls it, and then whatever he called, that's what it is, period". Many of us, including myself, thought that the game would get better when we gave the ref's the opportunity to second-guess their calls based on the availability of multiple camera views and instant replay. Over the years I've come to the conclusion that the thing it really led to is that the ref's are now not as careful to get it right in the first place. The drama that goes along with questioning the calls is good for the NFL making money, but IMHO not necessarily good for the fans' enjoyment of the game.

So true. It bothers me a bit when NFL network does top defenses of all-time and the Dolphins don't make the list. The team didn't have as many stars on defense as the Steelers (who does or did), but that unit worked so cohesively and has, over time, become very underrated. The biggest gain the Redskins had in Super Bowl VII was 15 yards and, as you said, the defense shut them out. Minnesota scored in the fourth quarter when the game was clearly decided.

I agree the game was more balanced. Understand the changes to protect the quarterback and agree with those. But man those passing stats of years past were really earned compared to today when it seems like receivers are running free and constantly open.

It was a much different game back then. Most teams ran the ball much more than throwing it. But to me the biggest difference was on defense....you could beat the crap out out of your opponent back then, head slap em, clothes line em, wear a cast on your hand, use stick-em....ahhhh the Good Old Days. But the picture quality really sucked by then.

Having instant replay has at least given fans the perception that the NFL is trying to get calls right. That's important since every game is now televised and fans see nearly everything that's going on. It does seem like officiating has gotten worse, though.

man that defense was unreal, and barring the penalty negating Warfields td, the end zone pick intended for Fleming and Garos brain fart , it was a slaughter maybe 31-0. Shula is still GOAT

Agree. The game had the feel of a blowout. If you did't know the score on the scoreboard, you'd guess is was more like 24-7 or 24-0 by watching the game. Never felt like it was in doubt and doesn't matter that it ended up being closer that it should have.

The other thing is people don't give that Washington team enough credit. The Redskins absolutely destroyed the defending super bowl champion Cowboys in the NFC Championship game. I was hoping for a Dolphins versus Cowboys rematch.
