Just wondering what some of your thoughts would be if a 7th team was added to the playoffs. Do you think the playoffs would be watered down like the NBA or NHL, even though they have 8 teams in each conference. Me personally I think a 7th team should be added. I dont think the two top teams in each conference should get a bye. I think the top team only should get the bye week. That leaves 6 teams playing in the first playoff weekend. then 4, and so on. I dont understand why the NFL doesnt add another team. How great of a football playoff weekend would it be to have a Saturday 1pm, 4pm, and 8pm game, and Sunday 1pm, 4pm and 8 pm game. And the NFL and teams would make extra money on the 2 extra games.
Thoughts?
(and of course I fear the Dolphins being the odd team out this year!!!:err:)

I don't see how adding a 7th team to the playoffs would work? It would screw up all the rounds, mess up any kind of ordering system they have now. It's never going to happen. I can't see an EXPANSION team happening because of similar reasons also.

First round
# 1 Seed (bye)
#2 vs #7
#3 vs #6
#4 vs #5
Say top seeds win.

2nd round
1 vs 4
2 vs 3

Conference championship
1 vs 2

Ordering would be just fine, and no extra weeks are added. Playoffs would be just as long as they are now, 17 week schedule would still work and 2 weeks before SB would still work. Not one change is needed.

7 teams in the playoffs, just doesn;t sound right. I guess it could work, but it just doesn;t sound right.

The problem with another playoff spot is that it could and eventually would, put a team with a losing record into the playoffs and I think it would make the whole process look a little silly.

In fact even without that 7th spot we could see the AFC west send their division leader to the playoffs with a losing record

very good point! I wonder what the record is for the "7th seeded" team has been over the years. That would definitely give that watered down effect I mentioned in the original post.

If you add a third wild card, you virtually guarantee that an 8-8 team will make the playoffs in the weaker conference every year, plus you give an even more considerable advantage to the #1 seed. Neither would be good for the game.

This conversation would be a bit anticlimatic

"He bud how about them broncos?"

"Yea, it was looking sketchy around the mid point of the season but we managed to get it back together."

"I have to admit i am a proud fan now."

"Hey Joe, what was there record again?"

"7-9- why do you ask?"

Personally, Im in favor of either going back to 3 divisions and 5 playoff teams with the two wild cards playing one week and ALL of the division winners getting byes. I hate the bye week thing. Often times better teams wind up playing the extra game than teams who get the bye. Despite the fact that wild card teams have won super bowls, its a HUGE advantage to get a bye in the playoffs.

Which is why the other option I like is going to division winners ONLY in the playoffs with the 4 division format. No byes. Just cut and dry, win your division and you are in. Otherwise you sit and watch. I realize that a team could post a real nice record and not get in, but hey....win your division.

I have been a fan of the idea of a seventh team. It adds more competition, and a lot of times, these 7th seeded teams have been strong enough to build on a momentum in January.

It would also force less teams to stop mailing it in come December.

EDIT: If there were 7th seeded teams last year, the Browns would have been in for the AFC and either the Vikings, Cardinals, or Eagles for the NFC. The Browns and Eagles could have gotten hot easily.

I see,

I guess that could work. Although i'm not sure i'm in favor of it. I think the playoff system is fine as is with the top two seeds getting bye's. Although i guess it does offer incentive for teams to try even harder to get that number one seed rather than call the season quits once they've clinched a first round bye.

I dont like that a div winner could make the playoffs with a losing record,
over a team thats second in another div with a winning record
