In this case, the Dolphins aren't here because they're a bad team. They're here because Joe Philbin has a history of underperforming despite solid talent. (And, obviously, his job status still carries some stink from the Jonathan Martin/Richie Incognito bullying scandal that happened under his watch.)
Now, some of this is understandable. Wideout Mike Wallace was never a true star player despite his big free-agent deal. Maybe you believe that quarterback Ryan Tannehill was hard-pressed to do much behind a bad offensive line the last few seasons and that his receiving targets weren't up to par.
Miami should get a full season of offensive tackle Branden Albert. The team reeled in Ndamukong Suh in free agency. Wideout should be solidified between Greg Jennings, first-round pick DeVante Parker and a trade for former Saints receiver Kenny Stills. The only question marks are the back seven (aside from cornerback Brent Grimes), how high Tannehill's ceiling is and Philbin.
Put simply, this team has too much talent to miss the playoffs again. If the Dolphins can't at least snag a wild-card spot, Philbin won't survive.

That anyone can confidently make that statement is absolutely hilarious. Albert, an 8 year veteran this coming season, has completed an entire 16 game schedule exactly once.

Also i haven't seen any proof that missing the playoffs would cost Joe Philbin his job. I heard that schtick all last offseason and yet Ross announced his extension before the regular season was even over. You know, "as a Christmas present".

Joe better get it done.....no more excuses. Joe needs to focus more and not get queasy in the 4th quarter during crunch time. Smart coaches like the Harbaughs and the Saint's Coach Payton seem to make some gutsy calls, and use smart clock management. I think Philbin needs to be less predictable and be able to anticipate what he has to to do several plays in advance. Quit burning fricking time outs for nothing.

with Mike T now the new sheriff in town, if coach Philbin does not take this team to the playoff....is Bye Bye Joe!

Agree. He needs to take the training wheels off and trust his players to make critical plays at critical times.
I think he's been queasy because he doesn't believe in some of his players. That has to change. He will succeed or fail with the roster he helped build.

Cam Cameron? I can say with confidence Philbin is better then Cameron. Not to say philbin is great i don't mean that. But Cameron was absolute garbage

I didn't want them to hire Philbin to begin with, but I think he gets short sold probably due to the pathetic local media.

The team was in almost every game, they won games they were not favored to win, and did exceptionally well against the very top competition.

They also choked away games that were in the bag, and lost to teams that they 'should have', and absolutely HAD to beat.

The moment he is gone, Mangini will probably be here quicker than Ross can mumble and stumble and place his foot in his mouth in a press conference. (Of his calling).

I think Mangini can be a good coach, but Philbin also has merits.

Ultimately he had the team in position to make the playoffs more than once but the players did not get it done.

Not only the players performance, but who we had out there to choose from. Ireland severely polluted the foundation of Philbin's roster.
Hickey's additions last year were like a band-aid -- good players but many injuries saw them dissolve away quickly. We had an explosive first game with guys like Moreno, Chris McCain, Albert, Delmas. All these guys were missing by season's end.
Throw in questionable characters/issues over the past few years like Wallace, Gibson, Pouncey, Incognito, Martin, Dion Jordan -- it's all an unnecessary handful.

Don't get me wrong, I never completely pardon the coaching staff, as I know they've contributed to the negative swings in games, but the roster, to me, has never been a playoff-caliber team in experience and vibe, only in (unrefined) talent. In that sense, I can give Philbin some benefit of the doubt.
Still though, you'd like to see a coach do more with less sometimes, and install some consistency where it didn't already exist.
