There has been discussion about a 80 man roster limit. The Dolphins currently have 83 on the roster. The 80 man limit must apply strictly to the beginning of training camp.

The league average is 83. I doubt any usefull players will be realesed till June 1st though. Of course teams may need to make some cap cuts to make dsure their rooks will be in camp.

Im pretty sure the idea of 'June 1st cuts' is ancient history. You can now cut guys in March and designate them as June cuts.

if there not under contract they dont count ... so all the rookies we have besides big Jake

Teams will hold on to high profile players to keep them from helping a team as much. Only players who play for franchises that respect what they have done and wish players like Zach the best opportunity is released in March. Disgruntled players and teams will have to and want to wait till the last minute. The June 1st cuts is far from history IMO.

The idea of June 1st cuts was some sort of cap advantage. Not sure the details of it, but it had nothing to do with holding onto a guy just so other teams dont grab him.

You are right it is cap help.

You can spread the cap hit over two years on e June 1st cut, instead of taking it all this year

Sure it does. This is the NFL where teams lie, cheat, and steal at every opportunity. Mainly the Pats are the only ones that are allowed to cheat though but the officials do also. This isn't the boy scouts. The only players released in March are out of respect from their former teams.

 Boy are you stubborn. BFIP just explained the reasons June 1st was once a big day for veteran cuts. But like I said, you can now designate guys cut in March as 'June cuts' and get the same cap benefit.

True, but the point stands that the date is no longer much of a factor in the offseason. At least is hasnt been since the rule was revised.

I'm not debateing that. I'm just saying teams can hold players till June 1st out of spite or to see what they get in the draft. March cuts is never going to take the place of June 1st for those simple reasons. Think about it people. March is before the draft and some teams start camp before June 1st so they can see what they got and who they can replace.
