The series breaks down what the player did in 2017, why they could progress in 2018, why they could regress in 2018, and whether we think they will make the regular season 53-man roster. We have completed a look at wide receiver Leonte Carroo, punter Matt Haack, safety T.J. McDonald, running back Buddy Howell, wide receiver DeVante Parker, defensive end William Hayes, and wide receiver Isaiah Ford. Today we move to the defense with safety/cornerback Walt Aikens.

I would like us to move on from Akins. Other than ST it just hasn't worked out on the field for him here. Feel good story as a late pick, small school but your ST veterans need to be decent backups and he is not unfortunately.

Aikens has been a very solid special teamer, I’m all for replacing Michael Thomas with him

Sort of agree. Aikens, like Thomas in past seasons, has been a good special teams player, but Miami's roster has been void of too much talent to afford to more than three players (kicker, punter and long snapper) that you can't really play on either the offense or defense. I see Miami carrying 5 or 6 corners and 4 safeties, can they afford to use one of the safety positions on a player that can't really play safety?

Man I felt like Aikens was rather competent on the field last year. He sort of came in that 3rd safety role they had for TJ and he wasn’t a disaster or as noticeable as some of the Michael Thomas breakdowns we had.

I am cool with him being a top special teams guy and a hybrid depth DB who won’t wet himself if asked to put extended time in away from specials.

Maurise Smith would be a nice upgrade IMO and he plays special teams I believe.

We already lost some good ST players. Can't lose all of them. You still want to have some guys that are top ST players even if they don't offer much to the defense or offense. Nobody seems to care about ST's till the moment they cost you the game

What you see is what you get with Atkins, a solid ST player...no more no less.
