Pennington should definitely be in the Pro Bowl and a legit MVP candidate (not to mention comeback player of the year). However, QB rating, IMHO, is one of the less meaningful QB stats. Would you rather have Kurt Warner, Jeff Garcia, Jeff George, Brad Johnson, Trent Green or John Elway, Fran Tarkenton, Dan Fouts, and Terry Bradshaw? If you are looking only at QB rating, you would take the first five guys hands down over the latter four (all HOF). It's just one reason why I put little stock in QB rating. If Marino had played in a west coast offense, his QB rating would have been off the charts (Marino would have 49ers offense better than anybody with those two studs--Rice and Taylor--to throw to and Roger Craig out of the backfield. NOBODY can convince me otherwise. For that matter, Dan Fouts would have been even greater in the refined west coast offense.) If you ask Walsh now, he would take Montana, of course. But when you look at who he really wanted for his offense, he wanted (by his own admission at various times) Dan Fouts and Phil Simms.
