Armando got the ball rolling over the weekend with this article: http://www.miamiherald.com/sports/football/story/893530.html

It talks about two key players - Vernon Carey and Vonnie Holliday. Now, Holliday isn't a free agent - we all know that. But he has a high cap number.

When I was doing more reading on the subject, I came across this breakdown of Vonnie's contract: http://www.thephinsider.com/2009/2/10/754214/more-on-the-vonnie-hollida

That link breaks down his remaining two years on the contract and lays out the "dilemma" as it's called in regards to Vonnie's future.

The bottom line is that releasing Vonnie saves $3.25 million in cap room in '09. So is he worth that much?

I don't think we should keep him having langford and merling. And he would definitely be out of the door if we bring in peppers, which we aren't, but a girl can dream.

I think we draft another DE no matter what we do with holiday.

i dont want to lose him this year... we need a vet. I just hope he restructures.

Vonnie is worth keeping at the rate for one more year, but the front office will consider the opportunity cost before making the decision. We need to see the full franchise list before we can answer this question. If Jordan Gross was not franchised (highly unlikely), then I would release Vonnie to supplement the deal we could offer Gross.

If we can sign Chris Canty, I think Holliday is gone; otherwise I can't see them letting go of a team captain without trying to restructure his deal.

i want him back. he was our best d-lineman last year and that veteran leadership is still needed. at this point in his career, 3-4 DE is his ideal position and he loves miami (now at least) - so i hope he re-structures as well.

i think that's the cap savings if we let him go.

Which is sort of what you have to look at, no? I mean, could you sign a guy of that caliber to replace him for merely $3.25 million? I don't think so. Randy Starks came at an average of like $5 million a year, didn't he?

Personally I think Holliday signed a fairly reasonable contract before 2007, and doesn't it only have two years left? I don't see why you don't have him play right through it, unless you get a trade offer. I just don't see anything compelling.

good points. i'd rather he restructure.

Even if he is rotating in off the bench 3.25mil is a bargain for a veteran team captain DE. I'd say keep him around unless we hit dire straights for cap room. I highly doubt we will max out our salary cap this year, so he probably stays.

exactly. You can say Vonnie is costing us $5.75 million in '09, but if they'd have to eat $2.5 mil anyway if they cut him, the cost of actually keeping Vonnie on the roster is $3.25 mil.

Also - somebody said restructure as a possibility. But since this is the last capped year, you can no longer take a player's salary and convert it into a bonus to spread the cap hit out. That's no longer an option. So the only "restructuring" that is possible would be a flat-out paycut - at least that's how it seems.
