I think McD focuses on fit for the system particularly when it comes to the RB position. There were reports pre-draft about how he met with the scouting staff and provided very specific criteria for what he wants in a RB.

In his last interview, Cook specifically said he was a "perfect fit" for the Miami offense. My guess is that his fit being such perfect has been part of the discussion. I think that if this gets done it will be with an incentive laden deal that gives Cook the chance to earn closer to what he's hoping for while keeping the base closer to what Miami is hoping for.

I can agree with that. My only nit is $$. To make an extreme example, Cook wants $15mm/yr - LF wants3mm/yr. Cook is the perfect fit. LF is 'almost' perfect. How much more is Mcd willing to pay for 'perfect?' I have no idea. As a reminder, I'd love to have Cook. This, in no way, is meant to dis anyone. My only question is how much Mcd is willing to pay. If there can be no agreement on $$, Mcd makes the call when to move on.

Cook is still guaranteed $2MM by Vikings in 2023.

If Miami offered $6MM guaranteed with $2.5MM in performance incentives, he has a pathway to his reported target amount of $10.5MM.

The incentives: 1,500+ all purpose yards, 10+ TDs, take 65%+ of snaps.

Y2 terms could follow similar structure, minus Vikings guarantee, and a smaller Dolphins guarantee.

My problem with "performance incentives" is RBBC. we all know Cook is going to want the $ and will, justifiably get frustrated if feels he not getting the snaps because Miami doesn't want to pay. wouldn't be the first time it happened. How to resolve that in a contract, I have no idea.

IMO the example is extreme on both ends. Cook is never getting $15mil/yr from anybody and LF a bad fit. My guess is that Cook would jump at $8, but we're probably not going over $5. And that we probably wouldn't call LF unless we had injuries and got desperate. If we got desperate then LF would be offered very near the vet minimum.

I think that provision helps the clubs. The Vikings get that $2M back when Cooks signs another deal at least worth that much for this season.

Another thing I'm not sure about is how if a signing bonus would be subject to offset language, or even if it's contract specific. It would potentially be a way to increase compensation for this year.

Yeah exactly. I think in some cases they can remove the offset on certain portions of it, although I don't know the CBA well enough to really have a clue.
