I usually just enjoy reading this message board, but with all this talk lately since our spurt of fumblitis...I want to say a few words.
On it being preseason and there isn't any gameplanning:
I like the fact that Nick isn't gameplanning. He's basically saying to the guys, go out there man to man and show me that you can just flat out play football. Show me your skills and your desire and maybe you'll make the team. This is obviously going to have the greatest affect on our offense. But at the end of the day after all the mishaps...I think we do have a good idea of who can play and who can't.
For an optimistic view of things:
Just remember those Dallas teams that won 3 superbowls usually went 0-4 in the preseason...but we are long way from comparing us a to a dynasty type team. But not winning in the preseason isn't that big of an indicator of things to come, at least I hope not :cooldude:
On our QB situation:
QB's are leaders and they must command the respect of their team in order to lead. I could be wrong, but judging by statements made by McMike and Co. they are rallying behind Ferotte. I don't think there should be any question who should start. If the mentality of the team is that they want to go out with Gus as their guy, then Gus should be their guy.
Is Gus or Jay the Answer?:
I don't think either one will win us the SB. It's RARE when some guy who has always struggled to prove himself all of a sudden leads a team to the promise land. Winners are winners and leadership and talent go hand in hand. You demonstrate those qualities throughout life and in everything you do. Tom Brady, Brett Farve, Troy Aikmen...they never hung around as a backup for long. They exhibited qualities that projected them into a position to lead and win. So how can we believe in two guys that can't outright win a starting spot.
On Nick Saban:
I'll admit that I was not a fan of the Nick Saban hiring, but since he's been here I absolutely love him. I love the fact that he's building a winners mentality. The fact that he knows it goes beyond how much talent we have and the X's and the O's...but it also has to do with heart, desire, leadership, team chemistry and character. The fact that he doesn't want to make failure acceptable...because to true winners it never is. That's something that DW did not do, and a reason why DW did not win.
Some positive things to hold on to while we wait and see what happens:
Saban - He's putting the foundational pieces in place for long term success.
Houck - I will not question a man who has had success everywhere he's went. Taking an o-line in which many people on here consider pitiful and transforming it into something special isn't going to happen overnight. So I hold out hope that a man with a proven track record will turn things around.
Coaching Staff - One of the largest coaching staff in the league. Lead by a man with a tireless work ethic. Coaching is a big a part of a team as the players are. I think this will go a long way in player development, game planning etc...
Ricky - Heart broken when he left us last year, but you can't help but love a player with so much talent.
So with Saban, the coaching staff and ricky, even though we are minus Surtain...I think we ARE better off then we are last year. So even if we do go 4-12 again, we still have things in place for long term success. So in my opinion we are off to a pretty good start.
